Week 1-2 Cross Country State Rankings *UPDATE #2*

UPDATED!

Now includes 2A Girls individuals, 3A Girls everything, and 4A Boys everything.

After an interesting first couple of weeks of the new Cross Country season, its time to try to get back into our normal routine. We had a hiccup last week with the idea of alternating boys and girls weekly rankings, so here are the first official Coaches Rankings based off of the latest meet results for both genders! Check them out...

1A Girls

by Jose Fernandez, Jose_Fernandez@scps.k12.fl.us

Team Rankings: - Week of Sept. 27, 2008

The biggest drop in team place from the preseason poll (due to discovery) was Canterbury & SJCD. Canterbury had two of their top 5 transfer to public school and another decide to not run. SJCD lost their #3 (moved out of state) and their #4 is playing club soccer. The first two weeks revealed strong performances from many teams. As we all know, every cross country course is different and you can’t equate a 20 min. performance at Embry Riddle to a 20 min. performance at Fl. Runners. That being said, most of the ranked teams will be competing at this weekend’s Fl Runners competition. If they are not competing head-2-head, then a comparison of the efforts can be equated with a smidget of variance thrown in for the later races (temperatures rise as the day goes on). The first battle for the top spot will be witnessed at Fl Runners between HTA & CSN. The story for the rest of the 1A teams is this: Most teams have solid front runners with distant 4’s & 5’s. What are your thoughts…? I would very much appreciate any input anyone can send me as to news, results, thoughts, etc., to better align the current happenings with the best possible educated predictions. The accuracy of this Ranking depends on the XC community sharing their findings with me. Send your input to: Jose_Fernandez@scps.k12.fl.us

1) Community School – They have begun the season by dominating every meet they have entered with an average 1-5 split of 1:34. Fl Runners will reveal just how far in front this team is from the rest of the 1A field.

2) Holy TrinityAcademy This team has produced some solid team performances at two very competitive meets. Placing 5th at Katie Caples and 2nd at the FSU Invitational, their 1-5 average split is 2:40. How close are they to CSN? Stay tuned!

3) Keswick Christian – Opened up their season this past weekend with a solid performance by such a young squad. They beat Lakeland Christian by 8 points and produced a 1-5 split of 2:14. With Canterbury dropping out of the top ten and their victory over Lakeland Christian, they have earned the #3 spot.

4) Lakeland Christian – They have won one meet and taken 2nd at two others with an average 1-5 split of 3:43. They move down one spot because Keswick beat them by 8 points at the Calvary Classic. Because of their great #1&2, I think they beat Keswick in a larger than 12 team field.

5) Pk Yonge – Has had two great team performances at the Mountain Dew Invitational (4th) and the Buchholz Classic (3rd). They have an average 1-5 split of 2:47. I look forward to seeing this team compete at Fl. Runners because they may be deserving of a higher ranking.

6) Maclay – This team waited until a large (36 team field) invitational to showcase their might. They placed 9th at the FSU Invitational, 1st at the Cougar Challenger, and 2nd at the Lincoln Invitational. Their average 1-5 split is 5:09, which is the largest of the top 10 teams, but their 1-3 keeps them in the race.

7) Geneva – This team placed 4th in a 17 team field at the Astronaut Invitational and will compete at Fl Runners. Their 1-5 split is 3:45. This team has a great #1 with a distant 4&5. A passionate coach with an extremely young squad should continue to improve throughout the season.

8) Trinity Prep – This team placed 1st at the Embry Riddle Invitational and 12th at the FSU Invitational. Their average 1-5 split is 4:20. At the FSU Invitational, Maclay beat them by 60 pts. and they beat Berkely Prep by 66 pts. This is another team with a great #1&2 and a distant 4&5.

9) Berkely Prep – This team placed 7th at the Mountain Dew Invitational and 15th at the FSU Invitational. PK Yonge beat them by 77 pts. at UF. Their average 1-5 split is 2:47. This team has a good #1 with a distant 4&5.

10) Northside Christian – Placed third at the Calvary Invitational (27 pts. behind Lakeland Christian and 35 points behind Keswick). Their 1-5 split is 2:50. This is another team with a good #1 and a distant 4&5

11) Teams trying to crack into the top 10: Shorecrest Prep, Canterbury, Westminster Acadamy, Dade Christian, Miami Country Day

Individual Rankings:

**Head-2-head competitions outweigh times due to course variance. Although, Stolting beat Hale at FSU, I kept Hale at the top spot as her main objective in the race was to stick with her teammates for some specified distance. But what a great performance by Stolting.

21) Teresa Ristow (HTA) – 5th at K-Caples 20:10, 23rd at FSU 20:09

22) Meredith Anderson (Ben) – 1st at Spanish River 19:51

23) Hannah Palm (Kes) – 3rd at Calvary 20:00

3 A Cross Country Girls Rankings 09/26/08   by Tim Brooks

Covering 3 A girls cross country this year started with a bang as Chiles High School made a statement with a great performance at the Mountain Dew Classic.  Almost every year Chiles is in the state championship hunt “but” comes on stronger at year end so their performance at the Mountain Dew Classic is impressive.  Satellite High the defending state champion team to its credit still appears to be racing without one of the Stern sisters so stay tuned.  Wharton High reloaded this year so look for big things from that school.  The rest of the field is becoming a bit clearer.  The hardest part of ranking teams and individuals is who deserves to be the last 5 to 10 teams or individuals ranked.  In Cross Country due to weather, course conditions, faulty course measurements rankings by just time is difficult.  In the team rankings I take into account coaching and a programs tradition and also with the individuals’ rankings to a lesser extent.  There are certainly more teams and individuals on my watch list than the ranked list.  So if your team or individual is not mentioned certainly email me your reason why but there is a very good chance I am following them already.

4A Girls

By: Ryan Raposo, John A. Ferguson HS (rraposo@dadeschools.net)
https://fl.milesplit.com/members/CoachRaposo
It’s been two weeks of racing that have included a slew of short courses, finish line backups,
and incorrect results. So taking all of that into account with this fable beginning of a season,
let’s take that weird taste in my mouth and turn it into some girl’s rankings!

Team Rankings:
(Rank. (Previous Rank) Team, Region- Commentary)
1. (3) Winter Park, 1- The Lady Wildcats have made their statement twice in a row and they are the
new team to beat in the 4A Class. With their two new transfers: healthy Shelby Hayes and Marjorie
Ducos working as a solid 1-3 with previous #1 Meggie Emons in the middle, the weight of the state
has now been transferred. The next two teams will be watching them closely in weeks to come,
probably from behind though.
2. (1) Bartram Trail, 1- The BT Bears opened the first week of the season with a big win at Katie
Caples over their new state rivals (Lourdes) as I thought would happen, but the slight slack in their
4-5-6-7 pack could push them out of the race when compared to WP and OLOL who both might put
their #6-7 inside that group. That back bunch really needs to close that spread. (Keep it up Allison
Gubitz! I said you were the upcoming star before and you need to keep proving me right!)
3. (2) Our Lady of Lourdes, 4- My oh my, I don’t think these Bobcats have seen a 3rd place ranking
anytime in the last half dozen years, but this is exactly where they sit as of right now. Being led by
freshman Victoria Villarnovo, these girls have a lot of work to do to catch the two teams ahead of them
because both of those teams know how to compete, and especially in the big dance. All the while
Lourdes has stumbled to a second place finish the last couple of years.
4. (10) Melbourne, 2- Are the mighty Bulldogs back for another round? I think they are, but they’re still
slightly trailing the big 3 at the top of my list. But Coach Woodbury and his girls (particularly newcomer
Vanessa Valentine) have made it above my little divider line, so we all must assume they’ve worked
themselves right back into the rank of champions. They finished slightly behind
Lourdes this week
at South Fork, where will they be in another month or two? I can’t wait to see!
--------------------
T-5. (6) Niceville, 1- The Golden Eagles are hanging in tight to this top spot in the state but they lack the
overall strength to crack the top four in my eyes. The need to continue working on their back pack and
if they can hold off some of their rival Region 1 teams, they can be a top five squad come November 22nd.
T-5. (NR) Lyman, 1- One thing that the Lyman teams always seem to have is a great bunch of freshman
and sophomores. These Greyhounds are no different with a couple of freshie Kristy’s running as their
3-5. But their five needs to close in on the pack if they want to catch Niceville and attempt a top 5 shot.
7. (4) Vero Beach, 2- My faith in these Indians has not been lost let me assure you! I still feel they can
and will break up this Region 1 domination, but they need help from their 4th and 5th runners in order
to get that done. This past week they saw a stable third place finish at South Fork. Keep it up girls!
8. (NR) Mandarin, 1- Let me say that these Mustangs have really impressed me over their drastic
improvement from Katie Caples to the DeLand Invitational, and their 27 second spread from their
1-4 is a great achievement. But that 5th runner lagging nearly 90 seconds back from the pack is
hurting their chances of being a possible top 5 squad for right now.
T-9. (T-9) Dr. Phillips & (T-9) Spruce Creek, 1- The last spot in Region 1 is still up for grabs between
these two top ten programs. I knew it would be close in the preseason rankings, and it stays tight
between the Panthers and the Hawks for another edition of my rankings. The Hawks edge is a strong
1-2, but the Panthers have a tighter pack. But my bet is that whoever has the strongest 4-5 will be the
team to make it out this year.
--------------------
10. (17) Cypress Bay, 3- No Amaro? No problem! Mariana Lucena is picking up right where she left
off and she’s helping jump this young squad into a top ten ranking right behind the Region of Death
teams. Keep it up and ride the Lightning!
11. (15) Sickles, 2- These Sickles Gryphons look to be one of the best teams coming out of the
Tampa area, and guess what... no seniors! Look for them to keep moving their way up this season.
--------------------
12. (13) Sarasota Riverview, 2- Another young squad with no seniors that’s still hanging out in the top 15.
13. (NR) Gaither, 2- Looking strong, but the 3 to 4 gap is a bit too big if they’re going to shoot for top 10 this year.
--------------------
14. (16) Douglas, 3- They snuck up on Spanish River @ Spanish River and they’ll keep catching
people if you don’t look out for them. Aquinas transfer Lauren Ross leads this up and coming squad.
15. (8) Wellington, 3- Ashley Brasovan is doing her part, but her very young 4-5-6 runners need to get their act
in gear to keep this team in the top 15.
16. (11) Spanish River, 3- Good squad, good pack, but just a bit too slow to stay up near the top ten. Without a
front runner, they all must improve together.
17. (NR) Palm Harbor University, 2- Just squeezing into the 6th spot for region 2, the Hurricanes are dealing
with the same problem as many other teams; a big gap in their top group. Close that 2-3 slot ladies!
--------------------
18. (NR) Palm Beach Central, 3- Palm Beach team led by Jennifer Farnung, 12th.
19. (12) Coral Springs, 3- Broward team led by Sarah Benckenstein, 12th.
20. (NR) Sunset, 4- Miami team led by Sophie Samrow, 12th.
21. (22) Ferguson, 4- Miami team led by Natalie Concepcion, 9th.
--------------------
22. (24) Coral Reef, 4- Miami team led by Jillian Roberts, 10th.
23. (NR) Killian, 4- Miami team led by Kali Benavides, 10th.
24. (NR) Southridge, 4- Miami team who desperately needs a 5th runner.
(The Miami public schools really need a wakeup call. They’ve been scraping the bottom of the barrel
since I’ve learned what the heck Cross Country is.)

Upcoming Teams: Palm BeachGardens, 3; Jupiter, 3
Slipping Teams: (18) South Dade, 4; (19) Braddock, 4; (20) EastBay, 2; (21) Flanagan, 3; (23) Northwestern, 4
Boxed Out (Region 1): (5) Winter Springs, (7) Timber Creek, (NR) Olympia
[Side note: All three of these teams are capable of being a top 12 team.]

Current 4A State Championship - Virtual Mock Meet I love this feature.

Team Rankings:

1 Melbourne HS- This team looked strong this passed weekend with an average time of 16:30. Marc Gold has made the improvement that might lead this team to a back to back Championship.

5) Gold, Marc 2009 17:16.00

1 Christopher Columbus HS- This team seems like it might be the only team able to defeat Melbourne on November 22. The Team has come together and still has not shown one of its top 5 performers.
1) Del Valle, Armando 2011 15:54.00
2) Gulesian, Mark 2011 16:28.00

4) Shaheen, Andrew 2010 16:49.94
5) Cabrerra, Dominick 2010 16:54.00

3 Dr. Phillips HS- This team has a great chance to be the Dark Horse at the State Meet if any of the top teams seem to falter. You can Count on Dr. Phillips to clean up the mess. Watch Out for them November 22.

4 Winter Park HS – This team is always in the hunt at States. Do not count the Park out just yet, they are still missing that front runner, but I do see hope for Gagnier and Posada.

4) Schnier, Christian 17:26.95
5) Haas, Chris 2009 17:41.25

8 FL Olympia HS- A unyielding team but may be left out because of the Region of Death. This is a tight pack that has to drop 20 sec to make it out of the hardest region in Florida.
