Hallandale's Calvin Golson Jr. Goes With FSU Garnet & Gold

Calvin Golson Jr. resembles a basketball player on the track. The 6'5 senior for Hallandale towers above his competition in the quarter-mile, but those long legs and quick strides work to his advantage. He was an integral part of the Chargers' success over the past four seasons including this year's state championship team. Golson Jr. recently he announced he will continue both his academic and athletic future at Florida State University.

"He considered attending Harvard, Clemson, Western Kentucky, UNO, Arkansas State and Florida," said Coach John Battle. He is a smart kid. He is really into STEM and Robotics."

The mid-distance stand out excelled on both the winning 4x400 and 4x800m relay teams at the state meet. Battle says Golson Jr. is a part of a new system they put in place where they take pride in coaching champions not superstars.

"We call him Mr. 6'5 All Da Way Live," he explained. "If you have the chance to see him run you'll understand why. He will definitely be a great asset to Florida State University as a result of his versatility."

Battle went onto praise Florida State and the coaching staff for providing him the opportunity to where the covenant garnet and gold.

"
I truly believe that this amazing kid only needed a chance," he said. "They handled his recruiting process with class and they now have a great young man that will be a key component in their future success. The best from this young man has yet to come. He is a great athlete and a better student. He's also a coaches kid, so track and field is in his DNA."

Coach Battle attributes much of Calvin Jr.'s success to his father Calvin Sr. who is a part of the Charger coaching staff and notes that he isn't the only one in the family worth keeping an eye on.

"He also has a sister we've been developing that we plan to unleash in 2018," he said. "She is just as tall and talented.
