Gainesville, FL- The 2nd Annual Gainesville Sports Commission Indoor Meet will take place this Saturday, February 7 in the Stephen C. O'Connell Center on the University of Florida campus.
This year's meet has been named in honor of Jimmy Carnes. Carnes was the founder of the Florida Track Club, Florida Gator's Track and Field Head Coach, past President of the Governing Body of USA Track and Field and 1980 Olympic Track and Field Head Coach. Carnes was named to the United States Track and Field Association Hall of Fame in December and is a long time resident of Gainesville, FL.
This year's meet will feature over 1,300 athletes from the states of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, Virginia and Alabama, ranging in ages from 6 years to 73 years old.
The meet features former Olympic Gold Medalist and former Gator, Bernard Williams, 2008 National 200m and 400m Champion High School Champion Chalonda Goodman (Newman, GA), 2008 IAAF Gold Medalist Lanie Whitaker(Booker T. Washington, Miami, FL), 2008 AAU National Champion and Bantam age group record holder, 11 year old, Dawun Hylton (Miami, FL) and his National Record setting Miami Gardens 4 x 400m team, and 3-time Foot Locker Finalist and 4 time FHSAA 1A State Champion Kayla Hale (Melbourne, FL). Sprinkled among the entries are NCAA, national and state champions, nationally and state ranked athletes. A list of top performers is listed below.
The meet is divided into a morning session for the under 19 group and an afternoon session for the open/college athletes. The morning session will begin at 8AM and the afternoon session is set to begin at 3PM. Meet information can be found at the Jimmy Carnes Track and Field Meet site here and at Halfmiletiming.com . Admission to the meet is $5.
“Live” results will be carried via the Halmiletiming.com site and there are plans to have a “Live” webcast at milesplit.us.
Entries are still being accepted through Friday, February 6. There will also be a Coaches' and Official Clinic at Hilton Garden Inn on February 6 beginning at 5PM.
