The 2016 Cross Country Finals showcased the top individual and team talent in the state of Florida. We saw upsets, freshmen phenoms, champions defend their title, and countless personal bests. Ricky Quintana delves into the state meet with a historical perspective.
The Region of Death certainly lived up to its billing Saturday morning at Sante Fe College in Gainesville, FL. There was both happiness and sadness, great performances and some shocking performances. Overall, it didn't play out as expected which left this author with mixed emotions on how cruel and exhilarating the entire qualifying process can be.
Buchholz senior Calum McFetridge clocked his second sub 16 minute time of the season to win the 4A District 1 Championship, but it was Mandarin who put them in a race that saw each team score an identical 54 points. On the girl's side Fletcher senior Kayley Delay and freshman Liberty Pigg went 1-2 to give their squad the team title over Mandarin with 33 points. Chiles junior Michael Phillips and Belen Jesuit junior Joshua Collins showed why they are two of the top boys in the class of 2018 duking it out in the elite race at Pre-State, with the hometown Timberwolve coming out on top in a FL#2 time of 15:27.80. On the girls side, Lincoln freshman Alyson Churchill continued her spectacular 2016 with the biggest win of her high school career. Team wise the Marist boys made the trip down from Georgia to defeat Chiles, while the Niceville girls proved why they are ranked number one in our Saucony Flo 50 team rankings.
In his last year of 42 years of coaching, Buchholz Head Coach Ron Norris is putting together quite a string of memories. At last week's Mtn Dew Classic, he saw his top runner, Calum McFetridge fall and then crawl to the line to finish 27th. And this week, at his own Buchholz Bobcat Classic-his 16th at Buchholz to go along with 20 at his former school, Newberry- he had to disqualify a runner for interference during Saturday's race.
The 8th Annual Alligator Lake Invitational left some of the coaches and athletes disappointed with the depth of the fields. Bolles, and George Steinbrenner were two teams that did not run their varsity teams in the invite race. However, the festive atmosphere, the quick course and well run event left many teams coming away with good feeling for the rest of the season.

On the boy's side four teams including Admiral Farragut, TFA, P.K. Yonge, and Northside Christian all have a chance at gold. Distance action kicks off the Florida Relays on Thursday night with the girls invitational 1,600m run being held on Friday. There are solid fields throughout and the big question is will the athletes entered run all said events which span ~ 5 hours on day one.Ricky Quintana previews the girls distance events.
The high school portion of the 2016 Florida Relays kicks off Thursday night with the 1,600m run (non invitational), 800m run, and 3,200m run and the boy's races are solid fields. Not many out-of-state contenders, but plenty of in-staters that could take down some state leading times. Ricky Quintana previews all the action.
After seeing a flood of high quality 55-meter dash entrants for it's 9th edition, the Jimmy Carnes Indoor Track and Field committee has decided to offer a final for this event for both the boys and girls. The top 9 fastest times in the 14 and under and in the 15 and older divisions will compete in a 55 meter final in the afternoon session.

And so it begins-a week of anticipation that will culminate in 10 athletes from four different regions being sent to the sunny San Diego, CA for the granddaddy of them all, the Foot Locker National Cross Country Championships. And who wouldn’t want to go? The weekend is set to backdrop of the storied Hotel Del Coronado( Marilyn Monroe’s “Some Like it Hot”) and Balboa Park which has seen so many great high schoolers clash to earn bragging rights as the nation’s top high school athlete.
What a meet? Each year, I look forward to the state meet. There are such great stories which come from it from the competition, it is like a move script...almost-you can't write stuff this good. Other than the stories, the other thing I like to look at is the history and the numbers. So, here you get both.
