Chiles senior Michael Phillips told me earlier this week he and the team decided to skip Pre-State, which was in their back yard, to do Great American and experience some of the best competition the country has to offer. The WakeMed Soccer Complex in Cary, North Carolina didn't disappoint.
Phillips gave a top ten nationally ranked Dalton Hengst of Maryland a run for his money. Hengst, who was 21st at Foot Locker Nationals in 2016, and ran a 4:08 1,600m outdoors won in 14:57.10 with Phillips a second back at 14:58.20.
His time ranks 14th All-Time according to our FLRunners.com database and is one of only 19 ever under 15 minutes. With the performance he passes Elliot Clemente on the list and is right behind legendary Lyman runner Teddy Mitchell and Daniel Moore who set a then course record at Great American in 2011 with a time of 14:57.60.
