FHSAA T&F State Championship: Day One Rundown


Girls 800m Run


Class 1A

Canterbury freshman Jessica Edwards forced a punishing pace to turn back defending state champion Grace Blair in the 800 meter. Her time of 2:13.33 was just off her personal best of 2:13.05 and was her first individual title. Her older sister is . Evangelical Christians' Sierra Oliveira finished 2nd in 2:13.96 and Blair third in 2:15.30. Blair finishes her 800 meter career with podium finishes in all seven years of competing(started in sixth grade) winning in 2017 and 2015. She earned podium finishes each time and finished no worse than 5th place and slowest time was 2:20.25 in those seven years and recorded her best state meet time last year with her 2:13.43.

Class 3A

Jinah Mickens-Malik overcame Miami Northwestern's  Ayoola Gbolade in the final stretch to claim her second title in three years. She won her first as a seventh grader. Her time of 2:11.26 was her best state meet time, but off her personal best of 2:08.05 set in 2017 at the Pepsi Florida Relays.

Class 4A

Newsome's Bailey Hertenstein claimed her first 800 meter title in a time of 2:13.18. She had earned podium finishes in her previous three tries with a best of 2nd place in 2016.

Finishing in seventh place was Lakewood Ranch's Shaleiya Lee in a time of 2:17.21. Lee is the daughter of 3 time state champion Kristina Bratton of Bradenton Christian and the University of Florida. Bratton won the 200m in 1995, and the 800 meter titles in 1998 and 1999. Her best at the state meet was 2:12.66.
