Scouting Report: Girls Class of 2020


The class of 2020 is one competitive group this season. With 10 girls already sub 18:45 before October, this class is one of the fastest the state has seen. 

Here's what you need to know - notebook style - about these junior girls.

Tsion Yared, Pine Crest HS

  • Reigning 2A State Champion
  • Yared captured two prominent course records in her undefeated season, at Larry and Penny and Tropical Park this season. 
King of The Hill Girls Varsity Race
  • Pine Crest is scheduled to race Great American this weekend. On a fast course, we could expect to see a significant dip under the 18 minute barrier. 

Parker Valby, East Lake HS

  • Started her season off with a PR of 19:17 at the Jim Ryun Invitational. She then dropped her time down to 18:58, and 17:46 at the North Port Invitational!
  • She is scheduled to race Great American. It will be a speedy field of Florida girls up in NC this weekend, and Valby will be one of the top contenders for the state. 

Valerie Lastra, Mater Academy Charter

  • She had an exciting race this weekend, running a PR of 17:45.77 on the difficult Holloway Park course.

  • Lastra has consistently dropped time week after week, improving gradually. 
  • She is scheduled to compete at the Junior Orange Bowl Invitational this weekend and then the 305 Classic the week after. 

Alyssa Hendrix, Riverview HS

  • Hendrix is a 2017 Foot Locker National Qualifier, with a PR of 17:30.00. 
  • This season has been quite consistent, and after her 18:04 performance on Holloway at the flrunners.com Invitational, she seems excited to have a race dip into the 17's soon. 
  • She has her conference championship this week and then will prepare for FSU next week. 

Rylee Pustilnik, Spanish River HS

  • Pustilnik has a had a smooth progression this season. She remains in the top 5 in every race she has competed in over the past few months. 
  • She placed fifth at the flrunners.com Race of Champions this weekend with a time of 18:20 and is also scheduled to compete at Great American this weekend.
  • Currently ranked #2 for 4A girls behind Hendrix, it will be one exciting post season!

Ashley Klingenberg, Lake Brantley HS


  • Klingenberg has had a very strong progression so far this season. She started off with a 19:18 at the Mike Gibson Summertime Run and has pushed that time down to an 18:22 at the Shark Classic just a few weeks ago. 
  • She has Lake Brantley to an undefeated season for August and September. 
  • Klingenberg and Lake Brantley are scheduled to race FSU Pre-state next weekend. 

Claire Openshaw, Creekside HS


  • Openshaw opened her season at the UNF invitational with a runner-up finish in 19:06. 
  • She captured her first win at Bale-n-Trail the next week and then finished 3rd at Katie Caples with a time of 18:26. 
  • She has a PR of 18:10 on the ARP state finals course and right now she is just 16 seconds shy of that personal best. 
  • Creekside is schedule to compete at the Bronco Classic this weekend and the FSU Pre-State the next. Right now Openshaw leads Creekside to be the #3 team in the state and #2 for 3A girls. 

Liina Winborn, Sunlake HS


  • Winborn started her season off with bang, running 19:11 to PR at the Buccaneer XC Jamboree. 
  • She consistently runs in the low 19:00s to 18:50s and PR'ed again at the Buffalo Invitational with a time of 18:26. 
  • Winborn finished 13th in the flrunners.com Race of Champions this weekend in a time of 18:59. Her next race is scheduled to be the Sunshine Athletic Conference and then the championship season. 

Taylor StoneOsceola HS (Seminole)


  • Stone finished 5th at last year's 3A state final in a time of 18:23. 
  • This season, she has taken her time from 20:06 to 18:30 at the North Port Invitational. She ran 20:06 on Holloway in late August and a month later, she ran a 19:22 at the flrunners.com Race of Champions. 
  • She leads Osceola HS this season and is scheduled to compete this weekend at the Land O' Lakes Gator Invite. 

Caitlin Wilkey, Chiles HS


  • Wilkey finished 9th at last year's 3A state final in a time of 18:40. So far this season she nearly tied her PR at the Buffalo Invitational. 
  • Wilkey is a strong #2 runner for Chiles and they are currently ranked as the top team in the state. Chiles as a team won the flrunners.com Race of Champions team title. 
  • She has some middle distance speed with a 2:18 800m PR and 5:07 1600m PR.
  • Wilkey and the Chiles team is scheduled to compete at the Aucilla Christian Warrior Stampede and then FSU Pre-State the next week.
