Marcelo Mantecon of Belen Jesuit ran a smart, gutsy race at the Brooks XC Championships today on the Balboa Park course in San Diego and was oh so close to a national title. The junior led through the 1-mile in 4:48.8. The 2-mile in 9:50.50. With a race strategy and the experience to understand that he would need to run a strong middle of the race to take the kick out of some fast finishers, he moved out to a 20m lead at the base of the hill on the second climb up before the downhill to the finish. When the winner, junior Jackson Spencer of Herriman in Utah, passed him at the start of the downhill, he fought hard to keep close. He came back and passed Spencer with around 400 to go. Spencer passed him back, and Marcelo fought hard with a determined last 100 to just miss getting the win.
Holy Trinity senior Evan Spreitzer finished 15th in a time of 15:45.50. Senior Preston Sangely of Spanish River was 48th. In the girls' race, sophomore Madison Muller of Sarasota Riverview was 19th in 18:01.20.
