FHSAA 1A State Meet Boys Recap

FHSAA 1A Boys 800m Run
Asher Dobrin (Oak Hall) 1:55.33

Asher Dobrin of Oak Hall got a bit of redemption after losing out earlier in a 4x800 meter relay anchor leg battle with Mateo Luna of Indian Rocks Christian, the senior in front of his home crowd Gainesville fans had the best finish in a very deep and competitive open boys 800 meter field with a 1:55.33 winning performance.

The 1600 meter champion from earlier in McWilliam led the field out with Dobrin running right off his shoulder in 57 seconds for the first 400 meters. Dobrin, who had a bit more rest compared to some of the top seeds who had two races under their belt in the 4x800 and 1600 with the likes of Mateo Luna and Braxton Legg showed those fresher legs on the final to pull away for his first individual state title in his last high school race.

Luna bounced back from a disappointing fourth showing in the 1600 as well as the high of anchoring his 4x800 meter relay to a state title with his teammates to start the day to get back to finishing on a high note with a runner-up finish in 1:56.29 just edging out McWilliam in third place at 1:56.43. Seven runners at 1:57 or faster made for a great last 100 battle for All-State positions.
