Citrus County Elementary School Meet
This is a very cool thing to see! Over 200 elementary school athletes (with actual school-sponsored teams! not club age groups!) competed in a county championship. Perhaps a state championship for elementary should be added in 2011...?

Big thanks to all of those in Collier County who pulled this one off. The teams were so supportive of the middle school state championship series that they chipped in out of their own pocket to get FAT timing so that it could be a qualifier! Love to see that kind of excitement!

Lindsey Enders is on fire with new PRs in both of her events winning the 100H in 14.66 and the pole vault in 12-6. That kind of unusual event combination is fun to see. Ansley Gebben (who shares my daughter's name!) took second in the 100H and won the 300H easily. She will be the favorite at state for the 300H title.
The Boys 100 Meter times created a lot of questions because they were seemingly out of line with the normal performances for all athletes involved. Times were in the 10.45 to 10.6 range where athletes had not broken 11 before. I hate to do this, but we have pulled these from the rankings.

The Fluehrs just knocked this thing out of the park. Their 1600 times were the second and third fastest times in the state this year. And Kathryn Fluehr's blazing 3200 meter time of 10:18.29 beat out Olympian Jenny Barringer's time of 10:18.84 to become third on the all-time list for a Florida girl at the 3200/2Mile distance behind Ashley Brasovan and Betty Jo Springs. AMAZING! And Erika Fluehr also nailed a new PR of 10:31.51 to be 11th on that same list and second in the state this year. Kathryn's time is the second fastest in the nation in 2010.
Eighth grader Emily Edwards also had a great day going 5:07 and 2:18 and we look forward to seeing her at 1A state and then middle school state these next two weekends!

Justin Osking put the shot a nice 55-4 for the win, but unfortunately fouled out on his attempts at the discus and will not advance. That's a shame because he was the state leader and it would have been a nice sweet at state. Lucky for him and us he is a junior and he'll get another shot at the sweep next year.

COLIN BARKER! This kid just won't quit impressing the pants of out everyone! He is crazy tough and has grown comparisons to Jim Ryun. He tied Olympian Moise Joseph's 2000 time with a 4:10.85, which places him 10th on the all-time 1600 list and 17th on the combined 1600/Mile list. He did this with no one within 17 seconds of him. Look out!
Barker had earlier helped BK to a 8:00 4x800, along with teammate Michael Wallace. Wallace cruised through the 1600 to finish in second in 4:27 and eased it in with Barker in the 3200 going 1-2 around 9:43.
Brianna Frazier didn't disappoint and does what she does nearly every meet: sweeps the sprint events! That will not be nearly as easy to do at state this weekend with Octavious Freeman to contend with, but it should be fun to watch them go at it in the 100 and 200. In the 400 it should be all Frazier.

Freeman sweeps her events: 11.73 in the 100, 24.02 in the 200, and 17-7 for the long jump (which I didn't even realize she competed in!). Those times are blazing for other mere mortals, but probably an easy strider for her. Look out for the state meet record (if not the actual state record!) to potentially fall in the 100 or 200 this weekend.
Trinity Catholic boys dropped an amazing time of 41.22 to overtake Deerfield Beach as the new state leader in the Boys 4x100. That time is #6 in the US this year.

Stephanie Schappert follows a 4:58 mile with a 2:13 800... not a bad double! That was following her anchor leg of the 4x800 (2nd in 9:45). The 1600 was really fast with the top 4 at 5:10 and under. Nicole Carpio was second with a 5:05 and later came back to win the 3200 in 11:05. Olivia Fay was second in 11:07.
Jerimy Strainge and Antwan Wright had some great battles in the 100 and 200. Strainge swept the finals with 10.54 and 21.35 (4th and 1st in the rankings) to Wright's 10.59 and 21.45.
In the field events... Anthony Amodio vaulted 15-5, which is the new state leading mark. Laquasha Graham hit an 18-7.5 long jump that is #5 this year.

After the two weeks of controversy after he was DQed at the county championships and was almost forced to forgo the rest of the season... Terrence T-Rex Mitchell wins the 100 in 10.84, the 400 in 49.74, long jump in 22-1.5, third in the triple jump 43-4, and was not on Hillsbrough's winning 42.22 4x100 team. That is fast enough relay time as is... with him that could easily cut a half a second.

Cody Riggs sweeps his events.
Kirsten Nieuwendam continues her breakout season with 23.86, which is the third fastest by a Floridian this year. Unfortunately, she false started the 100 meters so she is done with that event--unless we get the pleasure to see her race it in the post-post-season at All-Star Showdown, Golden South, New Balance Outdoor (or Nike Team), and any of the USATF or AAU meets... let's hope so. Would love to see her break one loose. But on the bright side she'll be more fresh at state to drop a big 200 time and help her relay team! Nieuwendam is currently #2 in the state in the 100 meters with an 11.60 last month.
Dashay Davis of Everglades HS won that 100 meter race in a new PR of 11.68 that is third best in the state. Davis was second to Niewendam in the 200 with a time of 24.11.

Julie Nunn of South Lake wins the 200 and 400. Her 400 time of 54.75 is a new PR for her and third fastest in Florida this year.
Four throwers put the shot over 50 feet for some big new PRs, including LaQuentin Smith of Dr. Phillips with a 56-7 that is the third best in the state this year. That is a new best by over six feet. Jacarvis Jones had a PR of almost 10 feet to hit 55-9.75. In case you're wondering... these kind if big throws raise some red flags for sure. But we verified with the timing crew and apparently they weren't outliers and the other throws in the series were close behind. Peaking at the right time I guess.
