Nike Outdoor: Florida Summary, Day Two

Girls Highlights

Sorry, boys, but for Florida Nike Outdoor was the girls show!

Brittany Jones has FANTASTIC Triple!

Brittany Jones, who has two more years left of high school at Deerfield Beach, put on a show! In the short race, Jones stretched for a third place showing--a new 100 meter PR for her (11.63). It was a race she didn\'t even compete in much of the year.

In the 200 meters, Jones went into the finals as the #1 seed from the prelims. In the finals Brittany went well under the previous national leading mark, but faced the #1 in the nation Alexandria Anderson of Chicago who bettered her own national leading mark for the victory. Anderson clocked 23.05, while Jones was close behind in 23.13--now #2 nationally.

But finally, Brittany got to taste the thrill of a national championship. She came back for ANOTHER race and this time won it all. She took home the gold in the 400 meter dash, with a fantastic time of 52.44--#1 in the US for a high school girl. It is also a new meet record!

Girls 100 Meters
Brittany Jones third place, new #2 in the state (more above). Barbara Pierre ended up in 8th place in 11.84.

Girls 200 Meters
Jones 2nd place--mentioned above. Ashley Duke was All-American with a 6th place, 23.92 dash--a new PR for her.

Freshmen Girls 1 Mile
Jamia Hutto took 6th place, 5:07.45. Aurora Scott of Virginia set the new meet record in the freshman mile: 4:54.08.

Girls Mile: Jackie Areson #1 All-Time in Florida

Jackie Areson dropped three seconds from her previous personal best. She took sixth place in the mile race with a time of 4:46.67. That time converts to 4:45.01, which moves Jackie to #1 all-time in Florida. Some may consider Jackie\'s time #2, behind Robin Campbell (1976) who ran the fastest 1500 in state history--which if converted to 1600 would equal 4:43.5. Flrunners though recognizes the 1500 and 1600/Mile as separate lists, placing Jackie first. Four of the top seven slots on that all-time list are filled by current high schoolers: Areson, Jenny Barringer, Nicole Schappert, and Kelly Parrish. Speaking of Schappert, she also competed in the mile race putting up a slighly dissappointing time of 4:58.44. It still earned her the 14th position at NON.

Girls 400 Meters
Won by Jones (more above). Mikaela Green took 5th place with a time of 54.37--a big PR for her. Odeika Bent was 13th place in 55.50; Charlene Fuller 17th place 55.97.

Girls 800 Meters: Danielle Bradley 2:09.51

Though our all-time state list in this event is not 100%, Bradley put up one of the top Florida girls times ever in the event and the #1 time so far this decade in FL. Her 2:09.51 earned her 5th place overall: she competed in the slower second heat, making a hard charge at the end of the race surging for the line against Renee Tomlin of New Jersey. Tomlin was given the nod by .01 after reviewing the photo finish.

Girls 100 Hurdles: James Wins, Clarke Third

Florida dominated the podium in this one! Pavi\'Elle James improved her previous best on the year by .02 to win the national title with a time of 13.74. Kettiany Clarke won the bronze medal with her 13.90 performance.

Girls 400 Hurdles
Deandra Doyley earned sixth place with her 1:01.45 All-American performance. Shannon Stuckman and Lizzie Harris were the other Floridians in the race. They hit times of 1:05.35 and 1:06.36, respectively.

Girls 4x100
Miami Northwestern 47.06, 4th place.

Girls 800 SMR
Miami Northwestern will bring back with them four silver medals, after their 1:44.46 second place showing.
