flrunners.com Primetime

On-Site Coverage:

Afternoon Session Girls Highlights:

  • Sixth grader Daesha Rogers of American Heritage leads big most of the 1500 before Elle Baker of Melbourne and freshman Emily Edwards of Canterbury close the gap and look like they may pass Rogers on the last lap.  With 100 to go, Rogers cranks it up, fights them off, and separates again to finish in 4:45.30 to Baker's 4:49.74 and Edwards' 4:51.04!  Courtney Russo of Ft. Myers and Devin McDermott of Lakewood Ranch had good days also going 4:59 and 5:00.
  • Raigyne Moncrief of American Heritage beats out teammate Khadeeja Dooling for the long jump win 17-10 to 17-5. Dooling also won the 300 Hurdles in 48.35. Both are sophomores.
  • Dunbar goes 1-2 in the shot put with Tamara Donaldson and sophomore Johnett Wililams going 39-4 and 39-0.

Afternoon Session Boys Highlights:

  • Cape Coral showed it has got some speed and could have been Primetime! Prince Holloway and sophomore Tyrell Johnson go 22.21 ans 22.31 for 1-2 in the 200.
  • Tyler Cardillo of Charlotte lights it up in the 1500, pacing all alone for almost the entire race and on his quest to hit a qualifying time for the championship division at New Balance Indoors... which he does with a huge 3:57.02 1500 that coverts to a 4:14 1600.  Carlos Miranda of Palmetto Ridge and teammate Joshua Pelletier have good days as well going 4:07 and 4:13.
  • Stephen Krupa of Lemon Bay clears 6-4 for the win as he prepares to travel up to New York City for New Balance Indoors.
  • Defending state champ Alex Kazanski of Wiregrass Ranch clears 13-6 for the win over sophomore Cody Chernoff of Palmetto Ridge's 13-0.
  • Justin Osking of John Carroll sweeps throws witha  52-2 and 167-4, which is #2 so far in the state.

Primetime Session Girls Highlights:

  • Diamond Spaulding of American Heritage sweeps the short sprints in 12.14 and 24.50. She's just an eighth grader! Jokira Jiles of Cape Coral took second in both of those with 12.55 and 25.19.
  • Deja Parrish, freshman at American Heritage, gets by Efe Cudjoe and Annisha Davis of Ft. Myers, and Amber Williams of American Heritage with times of 57.44, 58.61, 58.63, and 58.79, respectively. It was a really tight race!
  • Daesha Rogers, the famed sixth grader at American Heritage comes back after her afternoon session 1500 win and battles it out in the 800. Her prime foe again was Emily Edwards of Canterbury. Rogers took out the lead, Edwards took over the lead around the 300 mark before Rogers took it back and took it home. Rogers 2:15.39, Edwards 2:16.29.
  • The 5K was a three way battle between Kacy Smith of Estero and Kathryn Fluehr and Erika Fluehr of Community School of Naples. Kathryn lead the entire race, with Kacy and Erika tucked in behind.  Kacy found herself sandwiched between the twins for much of the race before they broke it open a bit.  Kathryn 16:50, Erika 16:58, Smith 17:33.  Vanessa Valentine of Melbourne lead the chase pack that included Olivia Ortiz of Lakewood Ranch, Katy G Solis and Bethany Jenkins of Estero to times between 18:08 and 18:20.  Estero's girls pack... mighty impressive and young!  Smith, Maria Frank, and Solis are sophomores... Jenkins a freshman.  Looks like we'll have plenty more great Estero, Lakewood Ranch battles for at least the next couple of years after this!
  • Rashida and Khadeeja Dooling of American Heritage went 1-2 in the 100 Hurdles 14.94 and 15.25.
  • Ashley Favors of Riverview beat out Jessica Montavlo of Palmetto Ridge 44.95 to 45.98 in the 300 Hurdles.

Primetime Session Boys Highlights:

  • Jerimy Strainge of North Broward Prep comes from behind to accelerate past big competition from Michael Bellamy of Charlotte and Sammy Watkins of South Ft. Myers. They went 10.66, 10.78 and 10.80, respectively.  After Marvin Bracy is a no-show and Strainge and Bellamy both pull out with groin tweaks suffered in the 100, that leaves Watkins to take the 200 gold in 21.74.
  • Ryan Schnulle of Charlotte battles back for the lead over Nicholas Palmero of North Broward down the home stretch to win the 800 in 1:53.80 to 1:54.91.  Jose Cartagena of Estero, a sophomore, was fourth in 1:56.48. But the bigger story, for me, is Bryan Hilgar and Anthony Borrego of Charlotte go 3-5 in 1:55.38 and 1:57.42.  Think about that 4x800 team of Cardillo + Schnulle + Hilgar + Borrego later in the season... deep into the 7:30s?
  • JL Hines of Boone lead the 5K for basically the entire race, often a large lead even.  And then the last lap Max del Monte of Chamberlain charged back with a 61 second last lap to steal the victory 15:18.14 to 15:29.10!! It was a sight to see!! Aaron Rojas of Estero and Ryan Stafford of Ft. Myers also had great races in 15:25 and 15:28.

Relay Day Girls Highlights:

  • Lakewood Ranch runs state's best 4x1600 with a 22:14, roughly 5:33 per leg. They came back to a 13:07 DMR.

  • Charlotte and Trinity Prep battled in the 4x1600 before Charlotte broke it open. The Tarpons crushed it and Cardillo brought it home in 4:15 to finish in 17:43.23 to finish as the second all-time 4x1600m in state history (not counting older 4xMile records). Trinity Prep held on for a big 18:16 time. The teams will likely battle again at this event at Florida Relays.
  • Using a different four runners, Charlotte showed their depth with an 11:12 DMR. They also won the 4x2 in 1:33, 1K SMR in 2:10, and 4x110 SHR in 1:14.61.
