Florida Highlights For Week of March 12

This weekend summary is a work in progress... please don't tell me how it is incomplete at this point or what we missed... just keep checking back through Monday and Tuesday.

New Balance Indoor Nationals

On-Site Coverage:

Lake Brantley Classic

  •  Ansley Gebben of the First Academy sticks to the hurdles this week and wins the 100’s (15.44) and 300’s (45.66).
  • Edgewater’s Britni Strates wins both the high jump (5-04.00) and triple jump (38-01.50)
  • Levonte Whitfield of Jones beats teammate Clim Robbins in the 100 in a time of 10.81. He also gets the win in the 200 (22.00), and a new state leading time of 41.47 in the 4x100
  • Otneil Teixera wins the 800 and the 1600 in times of 1:56.00 and 4:21.85. Teixera continues to impress each week
  • Will Bridges of Edgewater finishes second to Teixera in the 1600 but takes the 3200 in 9:46.96 almost thirty seconds faster than the runner-up
  • Timothy Richardson of Lake Nona won two of the jumps, the long and the triple with marks of 22-02.50 and 40-10.00.
  • Connor Canstay of Circle Christian clears 13-03.00 in the pole vault.

Bolles Bulldog Classic

Girls Highlights:

  • Courtney Walker of Mandarin wins four events! She takes home gold in the 100 (12.28), 200 (25.59),  400 (57.92), and long jump (17-09.50)
  • Chiles junior Lily Williams won the 800 in 2:18.44 and beat a strong field in the 1600 that included Rebecca Chandler, Mary Kate Ponder , and Stephanie Kurgatt. Her time of 4:57.31 is a new school record She was also a member of the 4x4 team that placed third and ran a 59.9 split first leg.
  • Williams teammate Carly Thomas won the 3200 in an impressive 11:04.58.
  • Episcopal’s Emily Smithwick clears 11-2 in the pole vault.
  • Gabby Samuels of Pedro Menendez launches the shot put 40-2.

Boys Highlights:

  • Evan Rosenberg of Trinity Prep had a strong showing in the 800 finishing in a time of 1:56.74.
  • Mandarin’s Eduardo Garcia and Whitner Chase of Trinity Prep had photo finish in the 1600, one one-hundredth of a second, 4:21.28 to 4:21.29. Talk about a close one!
  • Another Trinity Prep Saint, Griffin Jaworski, won the 3200in 9:35.12.
  • For the second straight weekend Garrett Scantling of Episcopal clears 6-06.00 in the high jump. He also wins the pole vault with a mark of 14-0!
  • Marquis Noble of Bucholz took home several medals. He won the long jump 17-09.50 and the 100 in 11.11 He also finished second in the 200 and third in the triple jump

Kowboy Invitational

Girls Highlights:

  • Lake Wales senior Octavious Freeman wins the 100 (11.42), 200 (23.47) and wins the long jump with a 17-09.50 leap.
  • Osceola star Tynia Gaither finishes second to freeman in the 100 (11.62) and 200 (23.47). Gaither also got 5th in the long jump (16-01.50).
  • Victoria Abnathy of George Jenkins beats out Ashley Favors and Jameshia Gant to win both the 100 meter hurdles i(14.45) and 300’s (43.58)
  • Riverview's Ashley Favors finished second with impressive showings in all three of her events the 100H (14.56), 300H (44.22) and long jump (17-6.75).
  • Lake Wales and Osceola go head to in the 4x100 relay but like most of the afternoon Lake Wales wins that battle 46.69 to 47.47.

Boys Highlights:

  • Perman Wilson of Lakeland edges out Osceola’s Defario Phillips 10.62 to 10.69 in the 100. Wilson also won the 200 in 21.67.
  • Victor Troutman of Kathleen wins the high jump (6-02.00) and long jump (22-01.00).

Merritt Island Invitational

Girls Highlights:

  • Phillicia Fluellen of Palm Bays sweeps the sprints winning the 100 (12.06), 200 (25.06), and 400 (59.62).
  • Melbourne goes 1-2-3 in the 800 with Elle Baker (2:22.12), Vanessa Valentine (2:23.75), and Rachel Greer (2:23.84).
  •  Valentine and Baker switch roles in the 1600 as Valentine gets the win (5:08.69) and Baker finishes in second(5:11.26).

Boys Highlights:

  • Stephen Williams of Astronaut got the best of Eau Gallie’s Hndre’ Pound but just barely. Williams edged him out 10.86 to 10.90 in the 100 and then won in a photo finish in the 200 with a time of 22.29. Williams wasn’t done with photo finishes in the 400 it went down to the thousandths! He beats Satellites Terrance Brookins 51.6666 to 51.6692! That’s about as close as they come.
  • Nate Murray sweeps the throws winning the shot put with a mark of 45-11.5 and the discus in 152-05.50.

Rutherford Rams Relays

  • Megan Clark  of Port St. Joe clears 11-3 in the pole vault.
  • Shyttiara Webb wins the shot put with a throw of 38-7. She also won disc with a mark of 104-01.
  • Pydrae Carroll of Fairhope has a nice day in the triple with a jump of 45-4. He finished second in the 110 hurdles, third in the long jump, and sixth in the 200.

Lake Highland Classic

Girls Highlights:

  • Boone sophomore Justice Donald took both the sprints winning the 100 (12.17) and the 200 (24.91).
  • Justice Donald – Boone 100 – 12.17 – 200 – 24.91.
  • Olympia’s Shadaey Campbell won the 400 in 58.85 and finished second to Donald in the 200 with a time of 25.23.
  • Geneva seventh grader Mackenzie Wilson finished first in the 3200 (5:22.71) and second in the 800 (2:28.96)

Boys Highlights:

  • Marvin Bracy of Boone wins the 200 (21.52) and 4x100 (43.04). Bracy also participated in two events he wasn’t use to running, the 4x4, and the long jump. He placed fourth in both.
  • Phil Duncan of Boone back from an injury runs a 2:00.63 in the 800. The time was good enough for first place.
  • Duncan’s teammate JL Hines dominated the 3200 in a time of 9:21.75. Hines previously lost two come from behind races in the weeks prior.

Montverde Invitational

  • Lake Mary Prep’s Abby Hani wins the long jump with a leap of 17-7.5. Hani was also first in the 400 (59.51), second in the 200 (26.64), and sixth in the high jump.
  • Eric Rapp of Mount Dora Bible throws the shot 158-10 for the win.

Ft. Walton Beach Relays

  •  Regan McAllister of Niceville wins the girls 3200 in 11:59.28
  • Thomas Howell of Niceville wins the 3200 in 9:57.00. 
  • Niceville and Fort Walton Beach went head to head in the boys 4x1600 meter relay.  Niceville barely held onto the win edging out Fort Walton Beach by just eight tenths of a second 18:43.82 to 18:44.63.

Ferguson Falcon Invitational

Girls Highlights:

  • J’Nea Bellamy of Miami Killiain wins the 100 (12.68) and the 200 (26.58)
  • Andrene Dume of Lely completes the 300 hurdles in 46.48.

Boys Highlights:

  • Felix Varela High School Junior John Green gets the trifeceta. He placed first in the 100 (10.98,  200 (22.16), and 400 (50.71).
  • Dylan Cook of Coral Reef has a nice showing in the distance races winning the 1600 (4:31.06) and the 3200 (9:55.49)
  • Kevin Delgado of Miami Coral Park launched the shot put 52-03.00 Twin brother Steven was second with a throw of 44-10.00 Steven took first in the disc with a throw of 136-07.

Dade Christian Crusader Invitational

Girls Highlights:

  • Eighth grader Diamond Spaulding of American Heritage wins the 100 (12.58) and 200 (25.27).
  • Sixth grade phenom Daesha Rogers gets the double in the 800 (2:18.69) and 1600 (5:08.53) more than 23 seconds better than her nearest competitor.
  • Kayla Gardner of Westminster Academy ran the second fastest time in the state in the 110 meter hurdles finishing in 14.55.
  • Briana Pulido of Archbishop Carrol finished second behind Gardner in a time of 15.21. Pulido finished 1st in the high jump (5-04) and second in the long jump (17-02.00)
  • Another former Warrior of the Week, Brittney Wagoner of Key West, defeated Pulido jumping 17-09.50.

Boys Highlights:

  • Jaylen Washington of Pace wins the 100 (11.24) and 200 (22.32).
  • Emanual Kent  of Upperoom Christian gets the double winning the 1600 (4:41.53) and the 3200 (10:22.57) Kent was the 1A state champion last year in the 3200.

Ft. Myers Edison Relays

  • Sammy Watkins of South Fort Myers wins the 100 (10.85) and 200 (22.27).
  • Andrew Jones of Naples throws the shot put 52-00.00. That is a top 10 throw so far this season.
  • Sarasota High’s Zach Larabee was equally impressive in the throws launching the discus 160-09.00, the eighth best mark of the year.

Pace Patriot Invitational

 Girls Highlights:

  • Latorria Bell of Pine Forest wins both the 100 (12.58) and 200 (25.99).
  • Bell’s teammate Darroneisha Lott dominated the distance events winning the 800 (2:22.28) and 1600 (5:26.86). Lott was also a member of the winning 4x8 team.
  • Johna Whitaker of Pine Forest wins the 100 meter hurdles in a very nice time of 14.77 and also wins the 300’s in 45.17. Whitaker was also a member of the winning 4x100 team.

Boys Highlights:

  • Robert Mann of Navarre gets the win in the 1600 (4:35.40) and 3200 (10:14.48) as well as the 4x8 relay.
  • Cole Fountain of Pine Forest clears 6-06.00 in the high jump.
  • Two pole vaulters clear 13-0. Bryce Wein of Gulf Breeze wins with a mark of 13-06.00 Chaz Reynolds from Pensacola High School finishes in second with a vault of 13-0.00.
  • Gulf Breeze’s Austin Droogsma launches the discus 167-02.50.
