New Balance Indoors, Day 3: Cardillo 3rd 4:13, Kilgore 9:29

Boys Mile

Tyler Cardillo of Charlotte had a great show down in the mile. It was an all-strategy and relatively slow-paced race. Lukas Verzbicas, the man everyone was keying on who already had victoies in the 5K and 2 Mile to his credit, took a measured race. He sat back in the back for several laps and that seemed to just throw everyone off.  Eventually Lukas broke free of the pack and the pace began to quicken... but not by much.

Tyler hung back toward the back of the pack and eventually found himself pretty well boxed in with a group of runners who never got much separation. After about five laps, Tyler's frustration was on his face and he knew he needed to get unstuck. Being his first indoor race though (and one of the first times he's had company), it was hard to know how exactly to do that. The curves are not exactly the ideal place to pass, but he eventually was able to swing wide around the bank and move up a few spots.

Coming around the final turn and into the home stretch, his legs were in hyper-drive but still was caught up a little bit. A few elbows tossed back and forth and another runner hitting the ground in the fighting for position ensued... but Tyler squeaked out and leaned in to steal third place with a new PR 4:13.48.  Verzbicas was less than three seconds ahead.

All-in-all a great showing for a first indoor race... he looks as if sub 4:10 is a virtual certainty in the near future outdoors!

Boys Two Mile

David Kilgore of Holy Trinity, coming back after his superb third place 14:50 finish in the 5000 meters two days go, ran what would be a new personal best in the 3200 meters. Though the time will top his athlete profile for now, the seventh place finish may be a little disappointing given that he beat the time en route in the 5K on Friday night!

But it was all-in-all a very successful showing in New York City for the senior.

Girls Pole Vault

Lindsey Enders of Holy Trinity was in the second flight of the girls vault against Morgann Leleux of Louisiana. She had a big of struggle today as she switched poles midstream and then later regretted the decision. She took three attempts a few times but evetually got the metric equivalent of 12-3.25.  She couldn't quite get the plant necessary to spring her over the 12-6.5 distance; however, she felt good about the performance and experience... especially after no-heighting in inclimate weather last week on her home track.
