BOYS WINNER: Marvin Bracy - Junior @ Boone

When Boone junior Marvin Bracy was told he was this week’s Warrior of the Week his response was, “it’s about time.” Bracy wasn’t being egotistical at all, he was more than right. He probably could have won the award numerous times for his blazing marks throughout the season. However, we held off in anticipation that his best was yet to come and at the 4A state championships he didn’t disappoint clocking in at 10.39 in the 100 and 21.24 in the 200.  Coach Josh Shearouse says all the hard work he put in this year really paid off.

“This wasn’t an easy feat to repeat in the 100 and the 200 and then what he was able to do on the anchor leg of the 4x1 bringing us from eighth to fourth. I know how hard it was for him to win that 200.  A lot of people don’t realize he ran a workout that day. He ran six races where he was full speed in all of them. He basically ran interval training so for him to do that kind of workout and then run that kind of speed is unbelievable.”

After a running a state meet record 10.31 in the prelims Bracy continued to show why he is one of top sprinters in the country. Shearouse says that working with himself and personal coach Ricky Argro on technique Bracy has improved from just a kid who runs fast to a sprinter.

“His drive phase and his quick start is a huge strength of his. You watch what he did last year and his closing speed and he got criticized for his technique and his blocks but the kid still ran a 10.19. I think the most impressive thing he has is his finishing speed. We talk about coming out of that drive phase and really hitting it hard and being able to lean the first 40-50 meters before you stand up. He’s out of the gate so fast but he doesn’t stop, he’ll finish the whole race. He’s able to hit that fifth gear that nobody else has and finish the whole 100 meters.”

Bracy was back on the football field Monday gearing up for spring practice balancing the two sports as best as possible. He will hit the track soon after with Coach Argro to work on technique and prepare for the postseason. The junior is set to run at Golden South as well as the Adidas Dream 100 in New York City.  Shearouse says that competitive nature is just a part of Bracy’s personality.

“He is one of those kids that is aggressive and just wants to be the best at everything. He loves practice. He loves the weight room and work. He loves stretching. He’s just relentless when it comes to this stuff and as a result he’s at the top of the game and the sky is the limit for him. He’s bought into the system here and he realizes it’s all for his benefit. He’s just a great kid to be around and I’m glad to have him on the team.”
