Miami Carol City hurdler Darrell Butler stayed close to home when it came time to make his college decision. The 4A state champion in the 300 meter hurdles picked the University of Miami over offers from Central and Eastern Michigan.
"Miami was the best choice academically. When I graduate from there I will have jobs waiting with the engineering program they have. It felt so right being a 'Cane'. I wanted to go there since I was a kid."
Butler, who placed fifth in the 110 hurdles at states plans to sit that event out his freshman year and learn as much as possible from current junior Devin Hill. His main focus at Miami will be the 400 hurdles, but Butler also plans on running the 400 and 4x4.
"I really want to win ACC's in the 400 hurdles just to make a statement early because I know I'm capable of running just as fast as the upperclassmen. I'm setting my mind to try and go 49, but I'm just looking forward to the collegiate atmosphere and maturing on every level."
He heads to Coral Gables on August 17th and is relieved the process is finally complete.
"Getting to college is a big deal. It's where the real world begins and showing your parents you are an adult now. I'm just glad I can make my mom proud because I'm the first of hers to go. It shows she's done a good job parenting. The recruiting process was tough. My decision alone showed me decision making can play a big role in life if you don't make the right one, but the coaches played a big part in my decision. Coach Deem has a great reputation with her athletes and with her hurdlers."
