1A Girls Rankings

By: Nathan Means, Mount Dora Bible School, nathan.means@chbs.org

Team Rankings:

Commentary: With quite a few transfers and injuries accounted for, these rankings differ significantly from the CPU rankings released earlier.  The top three appear to be in a class by themselves.  We'll know a lot more before the next set of rankings comes out, so more dramatic changes may unfold as schools show off hot new talent or a lack of summer prep.  Previous rankings are the CPU pre-season rankings.

  Team Name (Prev.)  Comments:
1. Providence School (2) Narrow edge from narrow split #1-#5
2. Holy Trinity Academy (3) Tightening up the pack might pull them to #1
3. Oak Hall School (1) VanGelder is injured, but the team is still solid
4. Community School of Naples (12) Barry sisters help make up for graduation
5. Westminster Academy (4) Tight pack overcomes lack of sub-20 returners
6. Maclay School (5) Two stars and a tight #3-#5
7. St. Johns Country Day School (7) Rock solid squad with a moderate split #1-5
8. Trinity Prep (11) Another solid squad that needs to tighten up the split
9. Indian Rocks Christian (9) No sub-20 returners but another tight pack
10. Benjamin School (13) Leader of a very close pack of 6 teams
11. Keswick Christian (8)
12. Pope John Paul II HS (14)
13. The Geneva School (15)
14. Bishop John J. Snyder HS (NR)
15. Florida Christian School (NR)

Individual Rankings:

Commentary: These are based on last year's performances, with transfers and injuries accounted for.  The field of returning sub-20:00 runners was only about 30 deep - only 9 of those have been under 19:00.  Not many pre-season racers in this bunch, either.

2A Girls Rankings

By: Gerry Spring, Lake Highland Prep, gspring@lhps.org

Team Rankings:

Commentary: Welcome to a new season! There has been a great deal of change in the landsacape of 2A girls for this season with the most obvious being the shift of defending state champ Estero to 3A. I expect a great deal of movement the first few weeks as things shake out. I will be at the Deja vu meet the first week and Katie Caples week two so I hope to see a number of teams/individuals early on. A few coaches have contacted me with changes  and I encourage all to contact me if I have missed some major moves. Good luck to all!

  Team Name (Prev.)  Comments:
1. Bolles (NR) State runner up looks solid on paper - They are scheduled to be at déjà vu meet so I hope to get any inside info directly from Coach Ryan.
2. Cocoa Beach (NR) Solid group led by Shleby Davidson - Can they close the gap between 2-5 to challenge Bolles?
3. Carrolton School (NR) Solid 1 and 2 - will need strong performances from 3-6 to hold off improving BK and Episcopal
4. Bishop Kenny (NR) Perennial power has a stroong pack 1-5 - a strong summer could easily see them move up - even with all the changes they are still in the toughest district/region in 2 A
5. Episcopal (NR) Remember them? The transfer of Mackenzie Wilson from 1A makes them immediately relevant again!
6. Academy of Holy Names (NR) Led by a strong #1- on paper a strong team but a little birdie has told me they may be missing some key parts to continue the challenge the top 5- will see how things shake out September 9th!
7. Pine Crest (NR) Like many of the teams from 7 on down it will all depend on closing the gap between #1 and #5
8. Immokalee (NR) Solid 1-4 - If #5 or 6 show early season improvement they can move up!
9. Ransom Everglades (NR) Led by state contender Nicole Carpio - 2-4 are close but can they drop time by states?
10. American Heritage (NR) Solid #1 with Daesha Rogers - Have 2-5 put in the summer work to help her?
11. Lincoln Park (NR) Another team with a solid 1-2 punch - if 4 and 5 improve they will crack the top 10
12. Gulf HS (NR) One of the unknown factors coming in this season led by Kari Grippo - they will be in region 2
13. Wakulla  (NR) Honestly this is a team I am not familiar with but have a solid pack - shoot me some info!
14. Florida HS (NR) Solid 1-2 as well - will they have numbers to help?
15. Bishop Moore (NR) Lost their top 2 to graduation but have been working hard - look at Haley Slocum as one the most improved early this season.

Individual Rankings:

Athlete Name – Team (Prev.)  Comments:
1. Shelby Davidson - C Beach (NR) Begins her season as the favorite to win it all. Will we see a race as good as last years 2A state meet?
2. Nicole Carpio - R Everglades (NR) A strong and healthy Carpio will make this rivalry one to watch all season
3. Laurel Brennan - N Boward (NR) Can she close the gap to challenge 1 and 2?
4. Mackenzie Wilson - Episcopal (NR) The new kid on the block from 1A - has the potential to drop time and be a true spoiler for the upperclassmen.
5. Colleen Doherty- AHN (NR) Still young and a solid runner - also has the potential to race with the top 2
6. Joanna Mccoy - Gulliver (NR) Joanna McCoy has transferred Gulliver from Coral Shores
7. Ella Wurth - Pine Crest (NR) Expect Ella to drop into the18's on a regular basis
8. Marie Madiedo - Carrolton (NR) No word on her summer but she is young and ready to crack 19
9. Kari Grippo - Gulf (NR) She won't stay here long - the question is how far up she will move up on this list in the early season
10. Ashley Heitling - Mt Dora (NR) Had a solid track season and looked strong at Camp
11. Maria Balcazar - Carrolton (NR) #2 of the Carrolton 1-2 punch - expect her to move up as well
12. Daesha Rogers - Am Heritage (NR) Will also move up - very young and very talented
13. Sarah Jane Jones- Bolles (NR) Bolles #1 will lead them right away in a strong test at déjà vu
14. Allison Penovich- C Beach (NR) The Beach #2 will run with Shelby at Astronaut Invite on September 10
15. Nicole Golden - Pine Crest (NR) Begins her senior season - ran her season best at state

3A Girls Rankings

By: Andy Holmes, Seffner Christian Academy, aholmes@scacrusaders.com

Team Rankings:

Commentary: This year's team title figures to beone of the tightest in recent years, with Estero, Lakewood Ranch, and Chiles looking as the top contenders. Do not count out Creekside and Fort Myers, who also look to be in the mix. Estero is already looking strong this summer, with 3 girls already running in the 18's. Lakewood Ranch looks to have the most tighly-packed of the 3, which could give it the edge in the battle for the title. Chiles could have 2 of the top 3 runners, which will keep its team score low. Can #3-5 runners close the gap for the Wolves to make it 4 in a row? Several teams have made the transition from either 2A or 4A, and 7 of those teams are ranked in the top 25. Things will become much clearer after the next set of rankings, set to come out after the second week of competition. If you have any information about new runners, transfers, etc. that may bolster your team rankings, please contact me!

  Team Name, Region (Prev.)  Comments:
1. Estero,  (2) Should have quite the battle with Lakewood Ranch for the title, looking to repeat, this time in 3A
2. Lakewood Ranch (1) Return top 5 from last year, and will be a part of a 3-team battle for #1 with Chiles and Estero, with Creekside and Fortt Myers also in the hunt
3. Chiles (3) Looking for a 4-peat, will need to close the gap between its #2 and #3 runners to stay in the chase
4. Fort Myers (7) How do they make up for the loss of state individual champ Sarah Spann? Enter Canterbury transfer Emily Edwards, who will help make them a title contender
5. Creekside (4) Have a great shot for a top 3 finish, led by the Rodriguez girls
6. Niceville (5) Graduated their #2 and #6 runners, but will look to improve on their 6th place finish from last year
7. Gulf Coast (8) Quietly put together an outstanding season last year then burst onto scene with #5 finish at state; By far the youngest of the top teams in 3A, return top 5 from a year ago
8. Fort Walton Beach (6) Lost 4 of their top 7 from last year, but will look for another top 10 finish
9. Choctawhatchee (9) Should qualify this year out of Region 1- the toughest region in 3A; just missed out on state last year; will look to crack the top 10 this year
10. Naples (13) Top 10 finish last year and #1 and #2 runners Klopf and Hogrefe have looked strong this summer

12. St. Cloud (10) Produced top 15 finish last year, led by Stadtlander twins, and return top 6 from last year
13. Wiregrass Ranch (14) Graduated 5 of top 8 from last year, but younger runners are looking strong, led by new runner Berlin Waters, and also return top runner Nikita Shah
14. Nease (12) Team comes up from 3A, and will look to build on its state qualifying team from last year
15. Martin County (17) Narrowly missed out on state last year, had a good summer of training this year

 17. Northeast (16) Move down a class from 4A, and return all of their top runners from last year
 18. Merritt Island (21) Return 5 key runners from last year's 11th place state team
 19.  Winter Springs (18) Move down from 4A, where they narrowly missed a state berth last year out of Region 1
 20. King (NR) Return key runners Otteson and Kolilas, and have several new runners who will make an immediate impact
 21. South Fork (20) Lost #1 and #3 runners from last year's squad, but have talent behind them
 22. Belleview (24) Blaney sisters return, but will look to get team to state this year
 23. Matanzas (19) Move up from 2A, and return 4 of top 5 from last year
 24. Bartram Trail (25) Will look to qualify out of a very tough Region 1
 25. Osceola (NR) Led by one Pinellas County's finest in Alexis Irwin, will look to follow up last year's state performance

Individual Rankings:

Commentary: Kacy Smith and Lily Williams look like the definite front runners for the individual crown, but look for severl others to be in the mix, including transfer Emily Edwards and Vanessa Valentine, who comes down from 4A. Williams teammate Thomas could also challenge for the title. Last year Sarah Spann won the title, but was not the favorite to do so.

4A Girls Rankings

By: Ryan Raposo, John A. Ferguson HS - rraposo@dadeschools.net

Team Rankings:

Commentary: It's been a long summer and so it's time to start putting the 4A Girls puzzle together. Different from other years, we've already had a few jamborees entered into the database, so preliminary CPU Rankings have been adjusted based on overall team track & field performances as well as recent race or time trial results. Most teams will be opening their season this weekend, so get ready to see a lot of shifting as teams start getting competitive! If I'm missing any team or recent race results, please let me know so I can get things squared away as soon as possible. =)

  Team Name, Region (Prev.)  Comments:
T-1. Plant, 2 (1) A tie for first place? So it isn't so! Well unfortunately for the Plant Panthers, the bullseye for the season will be resting on them (and Lourdes). They are your defending state champions and they return six runners from last year's state team. Be on the lookout for: Sophie Sanchez, I'm betting on her to be their new break-out girl after her very strong track season.
T-1. Lourdes Academy, 4 (2) Last year's State Runner-up team, the Bobcats return five from last year's state championship which includes the best sophomore class in the state (three girls sub 19:15)! Last year they only lost once against Plant, and that just so happened to be at the big show. So they'll be looking to even the score this season! Be on the lookout for: Molly Price, another girl that put together a break-through track season in 2011.
3. Dr. Phillips, 1 (3) 20:43 Team (3-4-5) Avg at the Mike Gibson Run; These Panthers are just a notch behind the podium teams from last year even though their top two girls should be scoring less than five points at the state championship this season, with their #3 not too far behind. But right now their 4-5 just can't make up the gap that the top two teams have set, so for now they're settled into 3rd place once again.
4. Spruce Creek, 1 (10) 20:26 Time Trial Avg; Coming off a tremendous track & field season, the Hawks return their entire varsity girls team and they are poised to make noise as they've quickly jumped into the top five this season. Kaitlyn Kelly (last year's #4) has been running on a complete different level this summer and also be on the lookout for: Courtney Belgrade, their new freshman who should be a regular in scoring varsity this season.
5. Hagerty, 1 (5) 20:40 Team Avg at the Mike Gibson Run; The Huskies made that big jump over the last couple of year from good to great and have continued to show their strength even early on this cross country season. And although they lost one of their top athletes, they've shown that great teams don't skip a beat when they are thrown a curveball. That, and they still return six others from state last year too. Keep working hard, ladies!
6. Ferguson, 4 (9) 20:56 Time Trial Avg; Running better than ever as a team, the Falcons are solid top ten team this year with top five aspirations. Right now their strength is in their depth, but depth alone doesn't mean overall success. Be on the lookout for: Emily Hernandez (transfer), Aylwyn Hernandez, and Lauren Gavulic; three new youngens that will be in varsity contention this season.
7. Sarasota Riverview, 2 (7) The Rams are a top ten team once again this year, but won't be content with just a #7 ranking as I know they have the drive to be a top five team as much as any of the teams ranked above them. Right now the only thing hurting them (based on last year's results) is a big gap to their fifth runner. If that gaps closes, they'll be a major force to be reckoned with!
8. St. Thomas Aquinas, 3 (6) The St. Thomas Raiders! Without a doubt the surprise team of last year with the tremendous show they put on at the cross country State Meet almost cracking the top five, followed by a State Runner-up performance in the 4x800m relay at the track state meet. If there is any team that catch Dr. Phillips, this might be the team. I can't wait to see them in action through the year.
T-9. Oviedo, 1 (3A #7) 21:25 Team Avg at the Mike Gibson Run; Making the leap to 4A, as they were just a few years back, these Lions should be sliding into another successful top ten season. They have one of the stronger packs in the state and if all of these girls work together to improve, they'll be right in that top five mix that we've seen with many teams already.
T-9. Mandarin, 1 (8) The Mustangs have really impressed me the last couple of years with their strong work ethic and I'm glad to see they'll be competing after the Duval County scare a few months ago. Their key to success is bringing up the back half of the varsity because with Mary Kate Ponder (state rank #2) leading the team, they're basically only scoring four other girls in competitions.
T-11. Olympia, 1 / Boone, 1 (14 / NR) Hanging out in the "Region of Death" position I have both the Olympia Titans and the Boone Braves duking it out. Unfortunately the teams in this position might be running top 10-12 all season long, but if they can't secure that #6 spot at their regional championship, they won't be competing at Dade City in November. Good luck Region 1 squads!
T-11. St. Petersburg, 2 (12) The Green Devils are coming in right where they left off from last season, just a notch out of the top ten. Their focus should be on trying to close their overall team spread. Once again, the back half of their varsity just isn't up to par compared to many of the current top ten teams.
13. Vero Beach, 2 (4) The Fighting Indians are coming off a great season last year, but after graduating their tremendous 1-2 duo from last year, they'll have their work cut out for them this year. They should be a comfortable top 15 team, but top ten just might be a reach this season.
14. West Broward, 3 (19) The Bobcats are led by their great 1-2 girls once again this season, but with a two minute gap between 2-3 they realistically won't be making many waves past the top fifteen. Bring up that back pack girls!
15. Park Vista, 3 (20) Another team with a strong pack, I can realistically see these Cobras jumping into the top 15 this year. They just need to get past that 20/21 minute barrier and then they'll really start rolling as a squad this season.
T-16. Newsome, 2 / Wharton 2 (NR) A battle for the current sixth position in Region 2, the Newsome Wolves and Wharton Wildcats are two closely matched teams. Wharton should have the pack-edge, but in a smaller meet, having a larger spread won't affect Newsome's score as much, so it should be a tight race between these two.
T-18. Dwyer, 3 (NR) The Panthers have Spanish River and Monarch right on their heels, so on any given day, this team could have a shot at top 15, or slide down to 20th. So be on the look-out for those teams right behind you!
T-18. Spanish River, 3 (18) The Silver Streak Sharks are starting off where they left off last season and have a lot of work to do if they want to crack the top 15. This is another rebuilding year for them, so they need a few girls to step up this year!
T-18. Monarch, 3 (24) These Knights look to be stronger this year after returning six girls from last year's state team, and with the restructuring of Region 4, they should be a top 20 team this season.
21. Coral Reef, 4 (23) The Barracudas are really hurting with their varsity team depth, but they at least edge the three teams below them thanks to a stronger 1-2 and they have the state experience from last year to help guide them this season.
22. Southridge, 4 (NR) Transitioning these Spartan sprinters and jumpers into cross country runners might be harder than we think, but right now, they're just making the cut to qualify to state.
23. Varela, 4 (NR) The Vipers have a better pack than the other Miami teams right around them, but they need to have a girl or two in the 20s to be able to hang with Coral Reef or Southridge.
24. South Dade, 4 (NR) A year removed from competing at the state meet, the Buccaneers look to be able to return this year. But just as with Southridge, these are primarily track sprinter girls.
  Upcoming Teams:
Lake Mary, 1 (NR) 21:46 Team Avg from the Mike Gibson Run

Individual Rankings

Commentary: For the top returning individuals, I listed the top 30 girls from the 2010 season (all sub 19:30 PRs) and then I shifted them around based on their track & field times. No jamboree or time trial times here. I also listed: Other potential top runners = Girls who broke 12:00 for the 3200m run; Girls who broke 5:30 for the 1600m run; and Girls who broke 2:20 for the 800m. It looks to be an exciting season! If I have missed someone, please let me know! =)

1A Boys Rankings

By: Carl Egbert, Barron Collier HS, carlegbert@yahoo.com

Team Rankings:

Commentary: This is a 2 team race up top again between Holy Trinity and Trinity Prep. Holy Trinity looked real solid at the Wickham Park Jamboree with Daniel Moore running just 5 seconds slower than Kilgores winning time the previous year. The next best teams are PKY, Maclay and Northside Christian. PKY with Westlake and Bolser provide a great 1-2 but don't count out a Maclay team in November and Northside has their own 1-2 in 800 runners Mario and Matt M.

  Team Name, Region (Prev.)  Comments:
1. Holy Trinity-3 2 Too much fire power up front and too much depth this year.
2. Trinity Prep - 2 1 Have the potential to go 1-2 in any race but may not have the #5 to run with HT.
3. P K Yonge 3 Great 1-2 punch with Westlake and Bolser and always run well when it matters.
4. Maclay 4 Maclay always shows up in November and this year will be no different.
5. Northside Christian 7 Return 6 of top 7 and lead by 800 specialists Mario Ojeda and Matt Montenari
6. First Academy 5 Returns a group with PRs only separated by 59 sec. Tough in big meet setting.
7. Circle Christian 6 Finished 6th last year and return 6 of top 7
8. Tampa Prep 11
9. St. John Neumann 13 Coach Olayos just keeps cranking out state teams and will have another solid team this year.
10. Community School 19 Great group of seniors will be swinging for the fences this fall. A FOGG has rolled into town!
11. St. Stephens Episcopal (NR) Is this the year they finally make it to the show?
12. Admiral Farragut (NR) Blake Arnold hope to leads his team back to States.
13. Bishop John Snyder 10 Return a team with a 67 second spread 1-5
14. Pensacola Christian 14 Return a team with a 49 second spread 1-5
15. Mount Dora Bible 8 Will need help from 4 & 5 to compliment Troy Clark and runners 2-3

Individual Rankings:

Commentary: This has the makings of an absolute war up top with six runners returning  with PRs of 16:02 or faster. Gousse and Salas vs Moore, Castagnaro and Brown vs Mutz. Add in 2 from PKY and Trinity Preps 3rd man and HT #4 and there is your top 10! Looking to crack the TOP 10 will be a now healthy Alex Montgomery and a rejuvenated Brent Scott from CSN. Long way to go til November and people must stay healthy because there are lots of runners knocking on the door.

2A Boys Rankings

By: Mike Becker, Ransom Everglades, mbecker@ransomeverglades.org

Team Rankings:

Commentary: With the top returning teams (Steinbrenner and Estero) up to AAA, as well as Mccarthy and Matanzas,  there is no apparent favorite in this division.  Jesuit and Astronaut are the next two returning teams ( 4th and 5th last year), but both graduated  most of their squads.  Ransom Everglades returns all 7 runners from a 5th place team, while Bishop Kenny returns a bunch as well after a strong track season.  There is a always a dark horse team or two.  This list will surely change many times.  But  look for those two tradition rich programs to "duke it out"

  Team Name (Prev.)  Comments:
1A Ransom Everglades (NR) Returns top 10 runners from 2010 team
1B Bishop Kenny (NR) Returns most of a young team after a strong track season
3. Immokalee (NR)
4. Tampa Jesuit (NR)
5 Berkeley Prep (NR)
6. Astronaut (NR)
7. Lemon Bay (NR) down from AAA
8. Nease (NR)
9. LaBelle (NR)
10. Lincoln Park (NR)
11. Pensocala Catholic (NR)
12. Pine Crest (NR)
13. Rockledge (NR)
14. Bolles (NR)
15 Lake Highland (NR)

Individual Rankings:

Athlete Name – Team (Prev.)  Time, Comments:
1. Bert Irigoyen- Ransom Everglades (NR) Defending state champion
2. Nicholas Palermo - North Broward Prep (NR) Strongest middle distance runner in the pack to challenge Irigoyen
3. Caleb Baker - Labelle (NR) 3rd place in 2010; clearly a top challenger
4. Mackenzie Reynolds - Nease (NR) 5th place in 2010 also clearly a top challenger
5. Brian Sharp - Robinson (NR) 4th place in 2010 3200, top returner
6. Nick Papa - Lake Highland Prep (NR) Strong track season and defending region III champion
7. Alex Main - Berkeley  Prep (NR) 4:26 and from a strong team
8. Taylor Hickey - Rockledge (NR) 2nd in region III in 2010
9. Jordan Gershman - Pine Crest (NR) 4:37 and 10:09 as a sophomore will make him very competitive
10. Michael Barr - Bishop Kenny (NR) 9:57 as a sophomore will probably predict higher than a 10th place finish
11 Matthew Morris -  Bolles (NR)
12. Dillon Hodge - Menendez (NR)
13 Zachary Perry - Bishop Kenny (NR)
14. Eddie Bustmante - Ransom Everglades (NR) 8th returner from last years state meet

3A Boys Rankings

By: David Gardner, Timber Creek HS, david.gardner@ocps.net

Team Rankings:

Commentary: College Football? NFL? Who cares….there's no lockout in Florida High School Cross Country.  Are you ready for some XC?!  Its finally back after a long anticipated off-season and our young harriers have returned from a rigorous summer of training and are primed and ready to 'party rock' the season (lmfao) The rankings for 3A Boys have taken some 'shots' this season with the departure of several key seniors and teams shifting classifications, but the talent is still there so lets "get crazy" and check out the pre-season rankings.  What teams are going to play the sleeper this year? What teams will fold in the end?...What team will see the 'champagne showers' of sweet victory? Looks like the answer this year is "in Miami..@#$!."

  Team (City), Region (Prev.)  Comments:
1. Belen Jesuit (Miami), Region 4 (NR) This squad was obviously not drinking the "tarpon" juice like I was last year.  All the rankings and Charlotte hype just provided fuel for the Wolverine Machine to take the 3A State Championship.  This year Belen returns 4 of their top 5, yes, that’s right, I said RETURNS.  And that includes "The Mechanic", Elliot Clemente.  There will be no sputtering or breaking down for this crew this year with the leadership of Clemente and the depth of Lopez, Tomas, Magoulas, and Martinez.  Belen's top 5 have a chance to all go sub-16 this year and have a JV squad that most teams wish was their varsity (this is me wishing). The Machine is well-oiled and transforms their talent into another State Championship.
2. Estero (Estero), Region 3 (NR) The new kids on the 3A block obviously had the 'right stuff' in 2A, but will it be enough to dismantle the Machine? Unfortunately for these 'CATS, the jump means landing on their feet to a runner-up finish.  Don't you hate population growth.  That doesn't take away from the talent Estero is bringing...Rojas is a solid front-runner acting as the Lloyd Webber of this CAT crew.  With Chavez and Briner able to match Belen's 2-3 there could be a 'mystery cat' finish in the end, but it looks as if the "Memory" of last year's championship is long gone.
3. Chiles (Tallahassee), Region 1 (NR) Buzzard boy and friends are circling this year waiting for a mistake from the Top 2.  If either squad stinks it up at State, Belen and Estero are dead meat and Chiles will feast.  With the nice addition of Cade Zimmerman and a strong track season from the rest of the youthful pack, the wolves are legitimate contenders for a State title.
4. Bartram Trail (St. Johns), Region 1 (NR) This may be a little surprising giving The Trail a #4 ranking, especially after the Bears came up short in the Region last year, but the computer doesn't lie.  Bartram returns their top 6 and these are no cubs, lead by the 'Grizzly Adam' Leo they remember who was sleeping in their Little Everglades bed last year.  Just missing the State nod out of the Region of Pain will supply all the motivation needed to make these Bears golden.
5. Fort Walton Beach (FWB), Region 1 (NR) The Vikes fall a couple spots short of a Top 3 finish this year, mainly due to Dearmon, Ammons, and Murphy jumping ship.  Leadership will be key for FWB and they have to have a 5 guy to Finish With Bulger to keep them afloat for a pack finish. Dade City is a perfect setting for a hostile Viking takeover.
6. Fort Myers (Fort Myers), Region 3 (NR) My forecast is for the tropical season to extend well into November for Tsunami Sam.  The loss of Ryan Stafford was a major levy to the Green Wave's momentum, but Brown steps in to keep his squad riding the swell.  The surge this year has to come from Shearman, Bautista, and Whittle to pull a solid 5 guy along with the rest of the tide (Can you say Cyril Kurland?...I can).  Aesop and company make this fabled finish a reality.
7. Lincoln (Tallahassee), Region 1 (NR) I know, I know….this is the ultimate sleeper here, but really its just a Trojan Horse waiting.  The computer rankings are a little deceiving when you see that Lincoln returns their Top 4 (16:30 avg), but not much after that.  Tell me that these 4 men of Troy can't find a 5th gladiator...I just don't see it happening.  If they pull a high 17 to low 18 guy at worse that would send them up the rankings by almost 300 points putting them firmly in a Top 5 position.  This is a gamble, but I see this Trojan horse acting like a sleeping virus to the computer rankings. The Trojans infect Little Everglades and battle their way to a Top 10 finish come November.
8. Booker T. Washington (Pensacola), Region 1 (NR) Its no JK that the Wildcats are back in the Top 10, but JK is the reason why the guys from Pensacola have clawed their way back into a Top 10 ranking.  Jacob Kotick is one of the best in the State and will have to finish that way if Washington wants to get frisky this year.  Bordelon and Edwards provide an equally talented 2-3, but they will have to grab the rest of the kits by their neck if they want to pull another Top 5 finish. Dade City is cat nip for Booker, look for an exciting finish from Washington this year.
9. Chamberlain (Tampa), Region 2 (NR) Moving down a classification to 3A won't be a trail of tears for these Chiefs.  After leaving the 4A Region of Death, the hunt will be easy game for this tribe in 3A Region 2.  Del Monte is a viable candidate to challenge Clemente for individual honors and with Russo, Montoya, and Fuhr providing a solid 2-4 Chamberlain firmly plants their spear in 3A territory.  Look for Liotine to provide a solid #5 after a much improved track season.  Chamberlain 'braves' the 3A competition and keeps their Top 10 without getting scalped.
10. Naples (Naples), Region 3 (NR) Gates and his golden group sneak into the Top 10 pre-season rankings, but it will depend solely on how this flock flies together.  Eagles are usually solitary hunters, but Naples is going to have to learn how to run in 'V' formation if they want a Top 10 finish. Naples looks to ruffle some feathers this year in Dade.
11. Palmetto Ridge (Naples), Region 3 (NR)
12. Martin County (Stuart), Region 4 (NR)
13. Leon (Tallahassee), Region 1 (NR)
14. Creekside (St. Johns), Region 1 (NR)
15. Wiregrass Ranch (Wesley Chapel), Region 2 (NR)

Individual Rankings:

Athlete Name, Grade – Team (Prev.)  Comments:
1. Elliot Clemente, 12- Belen Jesuit (NR) Superman is dead. A new superhero has invaded Dade…The Mechanic has the tools this year to fix the disappointment of a runner-up finish.
2. Max Del Monte, 12- Chamberlain (NR) This year's #1 is not as clear cut as last year.  Mad Max can make Little Everglades his Thunderdome with a shocking upset.
3. Thomas Howell, 10- Niceville (NR) The freshman down has been shed. A more mature Howell sinks his talons into a Top 3 and soars as the favorite for 2012.
4. Ryan Schnulle, 12- Charlotte (NR) Schnulle is the lone horse in the stable now.  Bets are still on for Ryan to place, but a difficult task without his fellow steeds.
5. Kamal Korso, 11- Terry Parker (NR) K-squared seemed to have the right formula this track season, but will things add up to a Top 5 finish at Dade City? You do the math.
6. Quincy O' Connor, 12- Celebration (NR) Who says you can't teach a Q-Dog new tricks? Quincy is back and can't be caged this year as he's looking to improve on a 14th place finish.
7. Aaron Rojas, 12- Estero (NR) RoJo may be the new cat on the street, but there's no taming this feral feline. Rojas scratches out a 7th place finish.
8. Carlos Miranda, 11- Palmetto Ridge (NR) All Carlos needs is his 'bear' necessities of speed and endurance to secure a Top 10.  Miranda mauls the competition for a strong finish this year.
9. Jose Perez, 12- Haines City (NR) If Haines City is known as the heart of Florida, then Jose is the soul.  Look for a spirited senior season from Perez this year.
10. Taylor Buzzard, 12- Chiles (NR) The "Buzz" around Tallahasse is Chiles is poised to steal the team title. Taylor will have to scavenge for a Top 10 to make it possible.
11. Jacob Kotick, 12- Booker T. Washington (NR)
12. Mac Reynolds, 12- Nease (NR)
13. Buddy Gates, 11- Naples (NR)
14. Avery Lopez, 11- Belen Jesuit (NR)
15. Trevor Touchton, 11- Lincoln (NR)

4A Boys Rankings

By: Jorge Fleitas, Christopher Columbus HS, jfleitas@columbushs.com

Team Rankings:

  Team Name (Prev.)  Comments:
1. Colonial (3) Only one thing will make this season a success for Colonial that is winning the state championship. They have the best 5 guys in 4A and probably the State. All 5 were under 10:22 in the 3200m this past track season.
2. Columbus (1) With a lot of off-field distractions behind them, the reigning champs are focused on getting back to championship status. But they have had about three stokes of bad luck this summer and it has finally left them a step behind Colonial.
3. HB Plant (7) Every year looks promising, and then they wind up short of expectations. Once again they may be the dark horse, 5 guys broke 10:25 in the 3200m in track. That puts them right with Colonial.
4. St. Thomas (8) You heard it here first "sleeper!” They can pull off an upset this season being led by the determined Tom Mccarthy. Watch for the Aquinas boys to come out swinging, just like the teams ahead of them they have 5 guys sub 10:30 in the 3200m in track.
5. Winter Park (5) This traditional power house always will be there at the end of the year. Look for them to have a slow start but an amazing finish in the top 3 at the end.
6. Olympia (DNR) They are on the rise if Moore and Dey can run consistently sub 15:50. You have to like this team’s chances of cracking into the top 3. Two guys that can end the year with a top 10 finish is a good start.
7. Vero Beach (9) This is a team that is over looked; with the track season Vero Beach just came off of they have a legit chance in cracking the top 5, maybe even winning States. Their 1-2 punch broke 4:35 in the 1600m last year and there number 3 Austin Wade ran 9:51 in the 3200. Their number 5 had an amazing track season making progress and finishing as a 10:23 3200m.
8. Park Vista (6) Their nice showing at States last year should allow them to build for this season I see them landing in the 8th spot come November.
9. Spruce Creek (DNR) This team did not reach the state meet  last year and I do not see this happening again to them this year. I see them finishing here at the #9 slot come this fall. This is a hard working squad that always gives their best.
10. John I Leonard (4) This team still has a front runner, his name is Anderson Charles, he may be a top 5 finisher this fall, and that should place his team here.
11. Seminole (DNR)
12. Boca Raton (16)
13. Sunset (17)
14. Varela (22)
15. Killian (23)
