2A Girls Rankings   By: Doug Nowlin, Pine Crest School, doug.nowlin@pinecrest.edu

Team Rankings:

Commentary:  And now for the 2nd half of the season.  This is the time when coaches and teams begin to realize that, though it may be wonderful to have one or two really fast runners, success in cross-country is dependent on runners 3 - 7.  Usually, those teams with close 1-5 splits become much stronger at this time of the year than those teams with wide gaps.  The 1-5 splits that I have listed below are based on individual season best times.

  Team Name, Region (Prev.)  Comments:
1. Bolles, R1 (1) 19:51 (Great American, NC); 1-5 Split = 1:49; Strong team showing at Great American by finishing 2nd in the Seeded Invitational.  Bolles is asserting itself as the 2a Girls team to beat.
2. Bishop Kenny, R1 (2) 20:48 (Great American, NC); 1-5 Split = 1:35; Also ran at Great American.  BK, and neighboring Bolles, will have another face to face meeting this weekend at Pre-State.
3. Robinson, R3 (4) 21:01 (FlRunners); 1-5 Split = 3:02; Some of us were unsure of Robinson's true potential following their fast team time at West Hillsborough.  This weekend at FlRunners, the Robinson girls put all doubts to rest.  This is a team that will contend with Bolles and Bishop Kenny.
4. Ransom Everglades, R4 (10) 21:07 (FlRunners); 1-5 Split = 2:18; Placed well as a team at FlRunners Invitational race.  Steady improvement in the right direction.
5. West Florida Tech, R1 (14) 21:08 (JD Mac Invitational); 1-5 Split = 3:48; Strong up front and working on tightening up their pack.
6. Cocoa Beach, R3 (7) 21:12 (FlRunners); 1-5 Split = 2:26; On paper, Cocoa Beach matches up very well with Ransom Everglades and West Florida Tech, so expect Cocoa Beach to also keep getting stronger and faster.
7. Carrollton, R4 (3) 21:17 (UF/Mt. Dew Invitational); 1-5 Split = 1:33; Don’t let this ranking fool you.  Carrollton hasn't raced in a few weeks.  When they race again (scheduled for Disney this weekend), the defending 2a State Champs will hover once again near the top.
8. Pine Crest, R4 (8) 22:00 (FlRunners); 1-5 Split = 3:57; I expect to be ostracized by my team this week.  I know they want to be ranked higher, but our girls must continue to work hard to close that 1-5 gap.  Pine Crest ran 22:00 at FlRunners, but top 2 runners ran ROC.
9. Lemon Bay, R3 (NR) 21:22 (North Port Invitational); 1-5 Split = 2:43; Welcome to the rankings Lemon Bay!  Strong team showing at North Port.
10. Nature Coast Tech, R2 (5) 21:38 (Zak Lucas Invitational); 1-5 Split = 56 seconds!!!  This is the type of pack running that all teams want.
11. Immokalee, R3 (NR) 21:44 (FlRunners); 1-5 Split = 2:55
12. Bishop Moore, R2 (NR) 21:53 (FlRunners); 1-5 Split = 1:46
13. Crystal River, R2 (6) 21:54 (Zak Lucas Invitational); 1-5 Split = 3:27
14. Rockledge, R3 (12) 22:16 (FlRunners); 1-5 Split = 2:03
15. Pensacola Catholic, R1 (8) 22:20 (JD Mac Invitational); 1-5 Split = 2:26

Individual Rankings:

Commentary:  Jason recently conducted a poll about the best part of the FlRunners website.  Most believe it is the access to race results, and I agree.  But try to also take some time and enjoy the after-race videos conducted by Todd Grasley and Olivia Ortiz.  Our Florida HS and MS cross-country runners are modest, but very well-spoken.  Great interviews!  Some of those girls interviewed are ranked below.

Athlete Name, Grade – Team (Prev.)  Time, Comments:
1. Julia Montgomery, 9th, Pine Crest (5) 17:52 (SB) (FlRunners).  3rd in the ROC.  Yep, must be the coaching … kidding!  Any individual success that Julia enjoys is entirely hers to savor.
2. Sarah Day, 12th, West Shore (2) 18:14 (SB) (FlRunners).  6th in the ROC.  Want to have a very successful cross-country season?  Build a base during the summer as Sarah reportedly did.  Sarah looked especially strong in the ROC and maintained contact with the lead pack throughout.
3. Mackenzie Wilson, 9th, Bolles (1) 18:39 (SB) (Great American).  Mackenzie led her Bolles team to the Runner-up trophy in the competitive Great American Seeded Invitational.  How?  By winning the race!  Congratulations, Mackenzie!
4. Adair Lyden, 9th, Lake Nona (4) 18:42 (SB) (FlRunners).  Adair ran a very strong race in the ROC to capture 12th.  One strong race after another, and so enthusiastic!
5. Claire Snyder, 11th, Academy of Holy Names (3) 18:48 (SB) (West Hillsborough Invitational).  Should be exciting watching Claire and her teammates race at Pre-State in Tallahassee this weekend.
6. Kaysi Roberts, 11th, West Florida Tech (13) 19:08 (SB) (JD Mac Invitational).  Kaysi captured the girls title at the JD Mac Invitational.  Congratulations, Kaysi!
7. Ella Wurth, 12th, Pine Crest (15) 19:33 (SB) (FlRunners).  Ella pushed the pace early in the ROC.  One of the best races I've seen Ella run, and I've seen her run many.
8. Lauren Archer, 9th, Ransom Everglades (10) 19:36 (SB) (FlRunners).  Lauren's Ransom Everglades team is gathering steam.  Expect her to continue to lead the way.
9. Macey Kaczorowski, 11th, Bishop Kenny (NR) 19:37 (SB) (Great American).  Racing with the excellent SE Regional competition in North Carolina this past weekend should prepare Macey for the best that Florida 2a has to offer.
10. Ashley Heitling, 12th, Mt. Dora (NR) 19:44 (SB) (Mt. Dora Bible).  My apologies to Ashley for omitting her from our last poll.  Amended race results kept her under the radar.  Fortunately, a cross-country fan in Jacksonville alerted me to her victory at the Mt. Dora Bible Invitational, which is one of the most challenging cross-country courses in the State of Florida.  Ashley was invited to the FlRunners ROC this past weekend, but did not run.  Hopefully, we will see her this weekend at Pre-State in Tallahassee.
11. Julia DeYoung, 11th, Robinson (5) 19:39 (SB) (West Hillsborough Invitational)
12. Abigale Weinfield, Lemon Bay (NR) 19:43 (SB) (North Port Invitational)
13. Ally Hajda, 8th, Bolles (NR) 19:45 (SB) (Great American)
14. Raleigh Nesbitt, 10th, West Florida Tech (NR) 19:47 (SB) (JD Mac Invitational)
15. Maleia Storum, 9th, Cocoa Beach (NR) 19:52 (SB) (FlRunners)

  Honorable Mention:
Maddy Hull (Robinson); Clarissa Consol (Crystal River); Lily Arnold (Bolles); Christina Hamilton (Satellite); Anita Munoz (Immokalee); Rachelle Alexander (American Heritage, Plantation); Michaela Ashley (Arnold); Claire Castillo (Titusville); Madison Scanlon (Robinson); Calyope Ortega (American Heritage, Plantation); Sofia Miguez (Carrollton)

  And What About?
Hopefully, Colleen Doherty (Academy of Holy Names) and Savanna Gornisiewicz (Pine Crest) can get healthy and return to their teams soon.  As for Daesha Rogers, let's remember she is only in the 8th grade.  She and her American Heritage, Plantation teammates are scheduled to race this weekend in Tallahassee.  Let's hope they have a safe trip north and can leave some of the Heritage administrative drama behind them.  Indeed, let's hope all teams have a safe trip to Tallahassee or Orlando, race well, and strengthen the 2a girls rankings even more.  If I left out anything in these rankings, please let me know.  Thanks.

2A Boys Rankings   By: Mike Becker, Ransom Everglades, mbecker@ransomeverglades.org

Team Rankings:

Commentary: Well, its obvious that BK is the class of AA for the first 1/3 of the season.  Solid performances at every meet with a elite number one runner, a very solid 1-3, and depth to back them up.  Immokalee seems to be approaching their potential, and has the depth that BK has but is weaker at 1 and 2 for now.  CB may have the best 1-3 if all run well, but to challenge BK, their 4 and 5 will need substantal improvements.  Hard to drop Nature Coast to 4, when they didn't race, but every one has to be somewhere, so NC don't accuse me of "not giving you love" . They are a serious challenger  for the podium with so much depth.  After the big four, there is a gap.  Ransom improving, but there 4 and 5 are still not where NC's 4 and 5 are as FL Runners.  Nor are their top 2 runners where CB, BK or Immokalee's are..    Without trying to use this as a bully pulpit, lets all keep in mind that head to head is how cross country works.  The West Hillsboro Race is hard to read, Wickham Park teams haven't been matched by most runners afterwards, and the FL Runner's course is the fastest  in the state  ( notice I did not state it was short).  Also Immokalle and CB ran in cooler weather than other teams did.  I haven't  conccoted a formula to equate 10 degrees in temperature differentials, so compare times as you wish.  I know that someone thinks they have been slighted, but there is a clear gap right now after the top 10 ( so I stopped at 11), though there are some solid programs that will be making their charge soon.

  Team Name (Prev.)  Comments:
1. Bishop Kenny (1) Another solid team effort at Great America solidifies their top spot
T2. Immokalee (9) 330 pts at Fl Runners tied along with CB, tells you how close the number 2 spot is.  Immmokalee's 5th runner is solid and improving rapidly
T2. Cocoa Beach (3) Still struggling at 4 and 5, but 1-3 is as good as BKs if not better when they are all "on"
4. Nature Coast (2) Took this week off, I think, and Van Natter is still listed twice Raposo .  These guys might still be number two but elected not to run on the ridiculously  fast ( notice I didn't see short) Chain Of Lakes Course course for FL Runners
5. Ransom Everglades (5) Improved dramatically at fast course
6. Jesuit (4) May be better than this but their best effort remains on a debatable road course
7. Robinson (7) Right behinf RE at FL Runners
8. Lake Nona (6) A solid pack keeps this team competitive
9. Eastside (8) Better than in 2011
T10. West Florida Tech (12) Yes, as expected WFT is moving on up the ranks
T10. Berkeley (10) Again, fastest times on road course, but these guys will wind up somewhere in top 10  at end of season

Individual Rankings:

Commentary: Barr is clearly number one as no one in this list has beaten him.  His 15:58 is the only sub 16:00 to date. Easy to compare De la Cruz  and Stathis who were almost equal at FL Runners, but harder to place Shelton and Walton who ran is less optimal conditions. Yarbrough's Greast American Race places him in the elite group here.  Casiano improving rapidly.  Still hard to place the West Hillsborogh times.   Three freshman now in top 12 (all middle school studs).  It would not be shocking to see some or all of them in the lead pack in November.  One would think the frosh will improve more rapidly than the vets. This is the first xc season in AA without an overwhelming favorite in at least 4 years.  Gonna be a lot of fun to predict the top 10 once November comes a rolling around.  This list is not a reflection of where I think all will finish.... just where I think they are right now (especially the three freshman).

Athlete Name, Grade – Team (Prev.)  Time, Comments:
1. Michael Barr - Bishop Kenny (1) only runner to break 16:00 to date: remains the leader of this list

5 David Yarbrough - Bishop kennt (4) Great race at Great American
6. Xavier Walton - Titusville (2) running one solid race after another
7 Miguel Casiano - Lehigh (NR) North Port effort was solid
8. Tim Oloughlin- Jesuit (NR) Still hard to compare West Hillsboro
9 Nic Jacobsen- St Andrews (NR) Top 9th grader, and threatening the top 5

3A Boys Rankings   By: Carl Egbert, Barron Collier HS, carlegbert@yahoo.com

Team Rankings:

Commentary: Round 1 is in the books with the edge going to Belen Jesuit at Fl Runners. Fort Myers proved to be a worthy opponent through the first 3 runners leading Jesuit 25-30 but then Jesuit placed 4-6 in front of FM #4 and 7 in front of #5. Look for both of these programs to continue to hold form through October and November. FWB used a 40 second spread to grab the 3rd spot in the ROC but is gonna need everyone to step it up if they wanna make a run at the podium.

  Team Name, Region (Prev.)  Comments:
1. Belen Jesuit,4 (1) 15:59 team avg at FlRunners to beat FM by 39

15. Navarre, 1 (NR) JD Mac Invite Champs

Individual Rankings:

Commentary: Carlos Miranda had to wait an extra week to air it  out but it was well worth the wait. He dispatched of a very strong field and looked very good doing it. Look for Lopez to close the gap a bit like last year as we inch closer to the post season. The dynamic duo from Niceville and FM looked awesome as did Fabian Thomas and Herbert Gates from Naples. Carlos, Ace and Tyler and Herbert are all in the same District and Region. That makes 4 of the top 10 from the ROC. Lots of good racing still to come.

Athlete Name, Grade – Team (Prev.)  Time, Comments:
1. Carlos Miranda, 12 - Palmetto Ridge (1) ROC Champ in 15:07
2. Avery Lopez, 12 - Belen Jesuit (2) Ran well for 2nd to Carlos in 15:13
3. Nicholas Morken, 11 - Niceville (3) 15:31 for 4th in ROC
4. Tyler Bennett, 11 - Fort Myers (8) Kid is tough as nails and runs without fear! 15:33 in ROC
5. Ace Brown , 12 - Fort Myers (7) Great run for ACE with a PR of 15:34 in ROC
6. Thomas Howell, 11 - Niceville (4) 15:38 in ROC lands him here
7. Fabian Thomas,11 - Belen Jesuit (5) 15:42 for a nice PR at ROC
8. Herbert Gates, 12 - Naples (13) 15:46 in ROC. Very solid for only his 2nd race this season.
9. Courtland Bernard, 12 - Sarasota (15) 15:58 at North Port for 3rd. Would very likely be higher if they raced at FLR
10. Lee Shearer, 12 - Naples (NR) Nice PR for Lee running 15:57 in ROC
11. Dean McGregor, 10 - Fort Myers (NR) Good lord this kid is a Soph and 3rd FM kid on the list.

4A Boys Rankings   By: Jorge Fleitas, Christopher Columbus HS, jfleitas@columbushs.com

Team Rankings:

Commentary:  My Ranking Reflect on what we saw and learned on Saturday.

  Team Name, Region (Prev.)  Comments:
1. Colonial, Region 1 (1) The Grenaiders are still sitting at #1spot, that 1-4 punch can be all they need to pull off the 2012 State Championships.
2. HB Plant, Region 2 (4) This spot came down to Plant and Mandarin for me, as the two teams continue to stay in a low profile . There are two reasons Plant find themselves on this list rather than Mandarin. #1 Read Coach Boza's new Book "Run, Rinse, Repeat" coach Boza has a  plan until State.  Read the book and you will understand! Reason #2 it's tough to beat a 9sec spread #1-6.
3. Mandarin, Region 1 (2) Mandarin slips to the 3rd spot slip-shod decision by Duval County Public Schools to limit all sports teams to competitions within a 50mile radius of the school. Really puts a damper on their schedule. There is no way around this mandate, but at least we will see them race Colonial at Bartram Trail.
4. Sunset, Region 4 (5)  It seems like Sunset put together the best performance at Flrunner, and may have taken a stride in the right direction. It seems the transfers have coped well with the training.
5. Columbus, Region 4 (3) The Hellions currently finds itself in the middle of the pack with a weak #4 & #5! Can the Hellions withstand a disappointing finish at Flrunners and bounce back?
6. St. Thomas, Region 3 (6) Head to Head Aquinas has won every team under them no mater what virtual meets say "Aquinas has shown up week in and week out, look for this young team to continue to progress as the season goes on!"
7. Coral Reef, Region 4 (15) What can I say: "I taught Coach Pino well!" His team has made huge strides in the right direction. They have a great #1 in sophmore Kurt Convey.
8. Flagler Palm Coast, Region 1 (8) The bulldogs have had a rough start in 2012, but look for them to show something at Pre-State.
9. John A Ferguson, Region 4 (9) Giovanni Herrera may have established himself as a top runner in 4A, and he has a nice Falcon pack behind him.
10. Boone, Region 1 (10) Boone finished with 17:06 team average just 7 points behind the Falcons on Saturday.
11. Winter Park, Region 1 (14) Victory over Lyman by a total of four points in Flrunners, is good for the wildcats to jump into 11th spot.
12. Olympia, Region 1 (7) Finished 18th at Great American Seeded Race with a Team Average of 17:17
13. Lyman, Region 1 (11) Lyman will look for a chance to get revenge against the Park they finished with a 17:13 team average.
14. Timber Creek Region 1 (NR) Rather than having the typical freshman jitters it seem Brandon Marques has made a statement and has a team to back him up! Team Average: 17:08 at Flrunners.
15. Park Vista, Region 3 (12) After edging John I Leonard and having a Team Average of 17:25 Park Vista rounds out the top 15.
