Trey LaNasa: What's Happening In The Panhandle

We had a couple meets on tap this weekend for the area, the JD Mac invite and the flrunners.com Invitational. It seemed to be a great overall weekend for the teams out of the Panhandle with a plethora of PRs and season bests coming from all teams.

The JD Mac invite looked to be pretty fast actually with the winning time in 16:37. Local school Tate won with 38 points.

The big race of the weekend was Flrunners. This was the meet we at Fort Walton went too and had an awesome time. All the races were orderly and on time. 8:38 was the boys start time. It was pretty weird for the coaches to tell us that we started not at 8:40 but at 8:38, and we started right on the dot. I want to make a huge shout out to our girls who placed second as a team in the Race of Champions! Niceville’s girls were also in the race and came in 17th so a good showing from the girls up here in the northwest.

The guys’ race was about an hour later and us guys were pretty nervous. The race went out faster than any I have ever been in before, the leaders at 4:36 for the mile. Coming through in 4:54 in the same vicinity as a couple of my teammates was also a first as I have never been sub five in a meet before. Usually we run in a very close pack, but our tactics went haywire with the fast start and 50 kids running past you. In the end we did pretty well with our top four finishing in our normal thirteen second split, but unfortunately our number five was injured and wasn’t in his usual 16:30 to pull us up near fort Myers. Oh well, third place was a solid effort and it was great to bring home two trophies which doesn’t happen often. The Niceville boys had a great showing with Nick Morken and Thomas Howell the dynamic junior duo finishing fourth and seventh overall in the ROC. Choctaw high school our in town rivals also ran in the Invitational race and were led by sophomore Sean White in 16:41!

We also went to Universal's Halloween Horror Night which was super cool too. Overall an awesome weekend and I cant wait for that Pre-State hill. Unfortunately, I found out that my good bud and fellow runner Brian Sarks doesn’t read my article so I’m putting him on the spot to read it.
