It was obvious from the moment the gun went off that Jackie Drouin was on a mission and like the post office, she delivered. In an amazing performance, Drouin went under 5:00 for the 1600 in cold, windy conditions to win in a runaway. Her mark broke the old mark of 5:09.9 set by Kathleen Turchin in 2003.

Mother Nature played havoc with this weekends races as teams from Georgia faced tough conditions at several large meets this weekend. At Furman, a muddy course provided quite a challenge for several of the states top teams competing against an elite field from multiple states. Jackie Drouin had a wake up call at the Carrollton Invitational as she found herself 10 seconds behind Abby Self of Grayson at the end of the race. Only a week before the Gwinnett Co. Championships, the talented sophomore from Grayson had delivered a powerful message. Ms. Drouin obviously took heed of that message as she ran a smart race to hold off Self for a 5 second win at Gainseville on Saturdya. More importantly, she led the way for an impressive 29 point victory for her team over their county rivals Grayson and Peachtree Ridge.

Some would call this the year of the girls distance runners. Already this season, two girls have broken into the all time top 10 list in the 3200 and a freshman out of Dekalb County has posted a 5:01 1600m time. It takes a sub 11:13 to make it into the top 5 on the girls 3200 list and a sub 5:13 to make it into the top 5 in the 1600 rankings. Two freshman have already run 5:01.88 and 5:10.11 in the 1600m, a sophomore sits atop the leader board in the 800m with a 2:12.59 and two girls have broken 11:00 in the 3200. It appears that the future of girls distance running is very bright indeed!
