It's regionals week! 4A, Florida's largest cross country classification, will kick off the road to state at the regional level as athletes head to South Florida on Thursday for 4A Region 4. We preview all four regionals in addition to seeing how our virtual meets see things playing out. It's going to be a crazy ride as the top individuals and teams hope to advance to Tallahassee for the Cross Country Finals on November 5th.
Mother nature tried to make her mark on the road to state by pouring down rain on runners at the 4A Region 4 Championship in South Florida. Teri Bernhardt-Rodriguez braved the elements as well to take over 500 photos of both the girls and boys race including this start of the girl's contest which saw three freshman go 1-2-3 led by individual champion Jordan Shapiro.
St. Thomas Aquinas junior Nicholas Rischar won his third race in a row and first regional title in his career at the 4A-4 championship in Miami with a time of 16:14.89, just shy of his personal best. The Raider boys won in dominating fashion with 26 points, a 36 second 1-5 split, and a team average of 16:41.00. Braddock edged out Ferguson for the runner-up spot by ONE point 101-102.
Freshman Jordan Shapiro of Miami Palmetto lead a 1-2-3 sweep for the class of 2020. Shapiro clocked a PR time of 19:02.58 on a tough Larry & Penny Thompson Park course to win her first race of the year and first ever regional title in 4A-4. Ferguson edged out Lourdes 44-59 for the team title.
Timothy Doyle wasn't in the front at the beginning of the 4A-1 race, but that was just fine for the 4A 1,600m state champion. The Freedom junior picked up yet another winning the title in a new PR of 15:50 over Bryce Bell who also went sub 16. On the girl's side, it might have been the race of the week as Kayley Delay ran a new PR and FL#2 of 17:37.40 with freshman Elayna Bahr also joining the 17 minute club with a PR of 17:59.30. We merged results from every regional across the state to find out who won the week.
