It is stacking up to be an exciting race and perhaps the best turnout we have seen for Florida high schoolers at an indoor track & field meet! The high school/youth events start at 8AM this morning and the college/open events will begin at 3PM, concluding around 9PM. A full 13 hours of indoor track & field! "Doctor Bob" Cooke will be on site with his handheld camera to bring you our live webcast of the meet. Look for updates here throughout the morning and "live" race results courtesy of Half Mile Timing. "Live" Updates: Girls 4x800 - Falcon Track Club (Miami Ferguson) wins in 10:32.79. Pioneer Track Club (Oak Ridge) finishes second. Boys 4x800 - Judges miscount laps on final leg creating a huge confusion at hand-off zone, Falcon Track Club (Miami Ferguson) holds on to win this one after running an extra 20 meters or so after the confusion--finishing around 8:32.91. Girls 200 - So many kids, using the assembly line procedure and not allowing anyone to use blocks. Chalonda Goodman wins her heat easily in 24.6, with no blocks! Girls 3000 - Kayla Hale wins in 10:04, Jana Stolting second, and Mariana Lucena in third. Boys 3000 - Matt Mizereck wins in 8:37, with Michael Wallace 10 seconds back. Gainesville, FL- The 2nd Annual Gainesville Sports Commission Indoor Meet will take place this Saturday, February 7 in the Stephen C. O'Connell Center on the University of Florida campus. This year's meet has been named in honor of Jimmy Carnes. Carnes was the founder of the Florida Track Club, Florida Gator's Track and Field Head Coach, past President of the Governing Body of USA Track and Field and 1980 Olympic Track and Field Head Coach. Carnes was named to the United States Track and Field Association Hall of Fame in December and is a long time resident of Gainesville, FL.
The 2009 Jimmy Carnes Indoor Track and Field Meet, presented by the GSC, will be held at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center at the University of Florida on February 7. It features competition for youth, open, and collegiate athletes. Additional information can be found at http://www.gsoc.com/events/trackandfield/jimmyCarnesMeet.aspx. More than 800 competitors are expected at this years meet as the inaugural event in 2008 featured more than 600 athletes and 700 other visitors from twelve states and throughout Florida. Participants’ ages ranged from five through 87.
