In Her Own Words: Kendall Ellis

Hey everyone! Hope all is well with you guys and your training and meets have been going well. Last week was the BCAA County Championships at Dillard High School. Judging by last week, winter is definitely over in South Florida. The sun was out and alive proving that this really is the Sunshine State. Anyways, both the girls and boys teams came out on top as the champions so congratulations to them. I must say the girls 4x4 relay showed up and showed out! Nice work girls.

Now this week part of the girls team is going to the Texas Relays. You know me, I say this is prime time bonding especially since we’ve never had just the girls go out of town before. My excitement really can’t be contained; It’s so hard to focus in school this week since I’m just that excited. However, I'm definitely not so thrilled about that early morning flight that’s for sure but for three days in Texas it's worth it. I know Texas produces some incredible athletes so the competition should be pretty steep but I have full faith in my team to be able to perform with the best of them. I’m just excited to go out and compete but most of all I cannot wait to see my role model and inspiration Sanya Richards.

Everyone else is on Spring Break, but not my teammates and I. Just a few more days and then break begins, but not really. A break from school at least, definitely not from track. Practice of course will still continue because as we all know the grind never stops.

Now leadership is key to a functional, successful team. Coach Armenteros is always emphasizing how essential and necessary a leader is. So this year, as a junior, I’ve attempted to step it up and embrace the role of team captain. I must say the job can be a little frustrating and stressful but I’ve always been one to take initiative when I want something done, and I have no problem doing it myself. I love the fact that the team managed to get new uniforms this year and I’m working on different fundraisers to get us some funds. On the flip side, team captain involves the not so pretty aspects. Coach says when people aren’t performing the way they should be, it’s a leader’s responsibility to see what’s going on and get the train back on track. Personally, I’m more of a behind the scenes, lead by example type rather than a verbal leader. Regardless, I love my team and I’m willing to do whatever it takes to help take us to the very top.
