In Her Own Words: Kendall Ellis

Hey ya’ll Kendall Ellis here. On Wednesday, St. Thomas had districts. As a 4A school, it seems like we’re so far behind in everything when some schools are already onto regionals, but anyways, the team did great. I’m really so proud of the team this year, boys and girls, as they’ve both progressed greatly throughout the season. Both sides of the team swept the competition to win the meet overall, as well as dominating in individual events. I think the highlight of the meet for me was not how quick we got out of there compared to last year, nor my performance, but the fact that a fellow competitor asked to take a picture with me and another runner. Now I understand capturing the moment and all, but I think Rick Ross said it best when he said, “I’m not a star, somebody lied”. Nonetheless I appreciate the picture and believe districts to be an overall successful meet.

As we get closer and closer to states, it’s about that time where full faith comes into play; having confidence in yourself, your team, your training and your coaches. States is really right around the corner and it’s easy to get frustrated when you aren’t hitting the times you want. The key is to keep working and, like I said before, to keep the faith. I constantly have to remind myself of this, so I know personally that it can be difficult to do so. A little something that helps me get by are some quotes from friends and fellow track and field athletes. Ali Ahmed, a runner from South Plains College, said, “Today is a fresh brand new day with goals to accomplish. Hit practice hard because I want to be number one and the only one!”. Another runner and friend, Teray Smith, told me, “I work too hard not to be confident”. Little do they know, messages like these really hit me hard and actually sink in since they know what it’s like as a track and field athlete, being in the same position I’m in.

This weekend there was no meet so yay free weekend, but for once I wish there was a meet. It’s crazy to think how fast this season flew by, it feels like just last week I was at last year’s state meet. But as we all know track is a year round sport and I’m sure many of us will be competing in summer meets, even after states. Comment and let me know what meets you plan on attending during the postseason.

That’s all I have for this week’s blog, remember to keep the Boston Marathon and Waco, Texas fertilizer plant explosion victims in your prayers. Best of luck in your meets and training and as always go for the gold!
