In His Own Words: Austin Droogsma

It's been a a pretty chill last couple of weeks, but their have been a few exciting points to talk about though like throwing in a college meet and preparing for the state weightlifting meet, and we just had our district meet, but I'll just go in order.

Last week I traveled over to FSU to throw the 2k discus in the open division of the Seminole Invitational. Now for those who don't know, anyone can go and compete in a collegiate meet by throwing in the open division. You just have to be competitive. The funny thing is that an FSU graduate (Michael Putman) took first, a current fsu thrower (Jeff Pelage) took second, and a future seminole (myself) took 3rd. It was a really great experience to go and do, and it was a good opportunity to see my future competition.

This past weekend I was fortunate enough to compete in the state weightlifting meet where I placed 6th over all. It was a great meet and I was really happy to be there. I benched 350 and clean and jerked 335 to total 685 which was a personal best by 10 pounds. I was really excited about that as well. All in all it was a great experience and I'm glad to have come away with some hardware.

We also had our district track meet  last week which I won both shot and discus, but it wasn't exactly a spectacular meet. I threw an ok 57'5 in the shot and a 164 in the discus, but it wasn't exactly ideal conditions for big throws. We had a cold front come through and it was about 50 degrees at throw time and there was a 15 mph tail wind that was gusting about 25 mph and on top of that it was raining. I wasn't expecting any record throws for the meet. I still feel like I could have done much better in both evens,t but it just wasn't going to happen but we have regionals next week at chiles in tallahassee and I think it will be a good meet but we will see how it goes.

This week I will be preparing for the regional track meet on Thursday at Chiles. So far its been a great week. I've been hitting 190 and stayin over 180 feet consistently. Shot is also staying where I want it to be. I hit 60's in practice all the time so I'm hoping that will transfer to a 61 or 62 when the meet pressure is on. I've been doing a lot of stretching instead of lifting to to be able to keep my arm back for discus which has helped a lot. I've always thrown well at the regional meets and I hope this year is no different.

Stay blessed throwers and I hope everybody has a successful rest of their track season.
