On-Site Coverage

Winter Park came into the girls race as not only the clear favorite to hoist the district championship, but also as the number one ranked team in all of 4A. A group of four was bunched up at the front early on. Kaley Schmick of Cypress Creek, Autumn Bartlett of University, and teammates Katherine Kuhn and Charlotte Stephens of Winter Park. In the second mile, Kuhn a two-sport athlete who also plays soccer, took over the lead. She crossed the line in 18:39.40 to take individual honors. Stephens and Schmick battled it out in the final meters with Stephens winning in 18:46.40 just a second faster than the Cypress Creek junior. Autumn Bartlett was fourth in 19:06.80. The Wildcats went 1,2,6,7, and 8 to win the meet with 24 points. Dr. Phillips (72 points) and Timber Creek (84 points) rounded out the top three.

Brandon Marquez is one of the top runners in 4A. The Timber Creeks sophomore has gone under 15:10 for the season and is the 2012 Cross Country Finals runner-up. At the 4A District 4 Championship Marquez was out front with recent University of Alabama commit Connor Ferrentino as well as teammate Michael Nazareth. Marquez pushed the pace at two miles, while Ferrentino just settled in with Nazareth right behind him. The Timber Creek sophomore crossed the line looking smooth and relaxed in a time of 15:28.50. Ferrentino was second in 16:01.20 with Nazarth in 16:03.60. Carlos Ramos finished fourth for the Wolves as they edged Colonial by ONE point 43-44 for the team championship. The Grenadiers had a fourteen second 1-5 split lead by Christian Arroyo, but it wasn't enough for the top spot. Host Winter Park was third with 77 points.
