A spectator at a recent track meet asked me if I was Amir Rasul. Being cautious I asked him why does he ask? By this time, a few friends had caught up with me so I felt a bit more comfortable. He apologized and introduced himself. I guess when he saw the perplexed look on my face, he thought he had better begin explaining. He told me that years ago he played professional football with a guy that had the same name as me. He went on to tell me that he told his wife, who was still seated in the bleachers, that he had to determine if I knew this guy that shared my name.
I looked over the man’s shoulder because I saw my dad walking over to us. Before any more questions could be asked, the man looked behind himself and shouted “Amir Rasul”!! He and my dad actually knew each other. They played ball together with the Buffalo Bills. After they greeted each other, the man told me that my dad had become like a brother to him during their time with the Bills. They had lost contact with each for whatever reason and were not going to let that happen again.
This chance meeting between my dad and his former teammate made me realize how terrific it is to have teammates. Because you spend so much time with these individuals, they become your family. In fact, some athletes from other teams also become really great people in our lives.
So, with the end of the 2014 track season approaching quickly, I want to give all of the seniors who have been a part of my life a well-deserved applause. Each of you has competed with great sportsmanship and I have learned from you. Please remember to contact me via phone or some form of social media.
