The AAU Junior Olympic Games is just shy of 10 days away from it's kick-off at Satellite High School.
After a major venue change from Hampton Roads, Virginia, to the Sunshine State, the AAU's administrative team and coaching staff have been putting together the final touches on the first major track and field event since COVID-19 shutdown most track and field meets across the country in March.
These updates included a brand new discus pad and cage, provided by donations of multiple former Brevard track and field athletes, parents, and coaches.
The four day event, scheduled to start on August 5, will showcase an abbreviated schedule with over 2,000 athletes.
All athletes, coaches, spectators, officials, volunteers, and staff will be required to sign waivers and daily temperature checks will be conducted at the gate with wristbands provided to those who pass the check. Social distance protocols will be required and labeled by markings on the facility, and masks for all people will be required while in the facility, with the exception of athletes while they are competing.
In addition to these protocols, all implements, hurdles, batons, and starting blocks will be sanitized with sanitizing stations present in all athlete areas. Capacity limitations will be enforced in the stands with sections blocked off to assist with the social distance protocols.
The 54th installment of the Junior Olympic Games will be the Space Coast's second time hosting since 1994, and even with the safety protocols in place, has the potential to boost the overall economy in Brevard by $3 to $4 million, according to Florida Today.
