What was the biggest adjustment you had to make to compete at the college level?
I really haven’t had to hard of a time with the adjustment of college running, just a couple little things here or there. If I really had to choose one though it would probably be my diet. I have an awesome mother who would make me big meals every night back at home. Here at school I really have to make sure that I am getting all that I need because I am pretty lazy in the cooking department. The moral of the story is your going to appreciate your parents a lot more after a year or two of college.
Is there anything you can tell high school athletes to better prepare them for the college experience?
If I had a couple pieces of advice to give to high school athletes would probably be yourself, be confident, and be patient. Everyone is different and have different needs, so if one guy may be doing his easy runs faster and you need a little bit more recovery give up that pride, and get done what you need. Stay confident in your abilities to become as successful of a runner as you wish. Something I still struggle with is definitely patience. This kind of goes a long with being yourself because you have to progress at your own rate even if you want to be up their the best guy right from the start.
You had a lot of great moments in your high school career. What stands out the most?
My best memories from high school almost all involve my senior year. That’s when I was running my fastest in high school and was the most competitive. Being competitive is my favorite thing. Some of the cool meets that Coach Butler took us to such Great American, Footlocker, and New Balance Indoor Nationals definitely were the standout meets for me and the ones I enjoyed the most because I got to go toe to toe with some of the nations best.
What do you miss most about running in high school?
The great team I was blessed to be on because it not only consisted of great runners, but also my best friends. I will never forget the crazy runs and things I did with my best friends Bret Butler, Joey Castagnaro, Alex Hoffman, and two other local runners Alex Dunnam and Charles Ballou. As well as the 6am jam sessions on the track workouts, the team gatherings, shooting the breeze with Coach Butler in the morning, and of course from time to time my hometown Palm Bay. To sum that up what I miss the most are definitely the people I have come in contact with.
What piece of coaching or advice that someone gave you has been the biggest help?
The biggest piece of coaching advice that has helped me most was given to me by Kyle Butler “No excuses, just results.”
