In His Own Words: Garrett Westlake

Hey Florida runners! I just wanted to congratulate every team and individual who competed at the state meet. It is truly one of kind experience to compete at the state meet and I always cherish it. Also big congratulations to the Oak Hall girl’s squad and their coach on their first ever state championship! With such a young squad I see many more in their future. My team placed sixth in the state meet. We were aiming for top five, but we were still happy with sixth place. In the beginning of the season our team wasn’t even supposed to qualify for the state meet, but our team quickly progressed throughout the season with our three, four, and five runners really stepping up.

My last state meet was a bittersweet moment. I couldn’t believe that my senior season was finally coming to an end. I’ve enjoyed every moment of running for P.K. Yonge since I started in the 6th grade. I have made so many friends at different schools and different states because of running. My team is my family and I’ll miss not being able to run with them and watch them grow and progress as runners in the future. Although I am excited for what the next four years has in store for me, nothing could ever replace my high school cross country team.

Unfortunately, I will not be competing in Foot Locker or Nike this year. I have been having some troubles with my diaphragm and I’m going to take it easy, and hopefully be able to compete at the FACA senior meet. Good luck to all those who are competing in post-season races. I know we have many talented runners that can represent Florida at the national level.

Lastly, I would like to thank flrunners and Todd Grasely for giving me the privilege to blog. I really appreciate it and it was an awesome experience to wrap up my senior year. Good luck to everyone next week and hopefully I’ll see you all in track season!
