Jimmy Clark and Ryan Pickering's epic battle in 2010 produced the top two times ever in meet history, 14:53.29 and 14:55.48, one year after Matt Mizereck and Armando DelValle went 14:56.21 and 14:56.84. That quartet are the only athletes to ever break 15 minutes while 29 have gone under 15:30 in the past 17 years. Palmetto Ridge hosted the talent filled 3A District 12 meet on Thursday hosting ten powerhouse teams for their first state series qualifying meet of the season. Many state standouts competed and earned their spots advancing to compete in Regionals next week. The state series is always the most anticipated part of the season where countless hours of hard work shines. A special thank you to Robert Brown who was on-site and captured over 1,700 photos of this action-packed District meet.

Palmetto Ridge senior Carlos Miranda is a three time regional champion and one of the best runners in Southwest Florida and in the state. Recently, Miranda ended his college recruitment by selecting the in state Florida Gators.

The state championships have come and gone and now Florida's top runners will see how they fare against runners from across the southern United States. McAlpine Greenway Park in Charlotte, North Carolina the site of Foot Locker South Cross Country Championships. The Sunshine State has been well represented the past few years sending multiple runners to Foot Locker Nationals in San Diego, California. This year looks to be no different with the strongest hopefuls coming in 4A state champions Andres Arroyo and Bridget Blake.

Twenty runners have broken sixteen minutes this year and four have gone under 15:30 making 3A one of the hardest classifications of all. Can Avery Lopez follow in the footsteps of last year's champ Elliot Clemente and give Belen another individual title? Is it the year of Palmetto Ridge senior Carlos Miranda or will a member of Fort Myers or Niceville's dynamic duos take home the honors? Will nationally ranked Belen be tested? If so, is it the tight pack of Fort Walton Beach or Fort Myers led by Bennett and Brown? This will shape up to be one of the best races of the day.

Take a beautiful, cool SW Florida morning and mix in a flat, short grass field, a nine meter tall man-made hill, a soccer field, a sugar sand / gravel jeep trail, some woods, a three net sand volleyball pit, three 180º switchbacks and run it twice, hard, and you have the 3A Region 3 meet at Estero Community Park.

The 3A District 12 course is the same modified triple looper around the soccer and baseball fields of North Collier Regional Park that was the site of the inaugural Barron Collier Invite earlier this season. With its deep Bermuda grass, slightly long measure, and redundant trek it has proven to be a tough-to-PR course. That said, the weather conditions on this day were excellent to buck that notion and see some fast times.

In the two years since the last Collier County Athletic Conference cross country meet, things haven't changed much. Gulf Coast's Caroline Barlow and Palmetto Ridge's Carlos Miranda won the individual titles, while the Sharks girls and Naples boys took the team trophies.
