What a day for Florida distance fans! Several Floridians traveled out to the famed Arcadia Invitational in California this weekend. Matt Mizereck (Leon), Colin Barker (BK), and Michael Wallace (BK) competed in the invitational division of the 3200 meter race and certainly came through! Mizereck finished in a fourth place 8:55.75, Barker in sixth 8:56.80, and Wallace 19th place 9:02.22! Getting an idea yet how elite that race was? To put it into perspective those times ar 5th, 6th, and 12th on the All-Time list for Florida. In other Florida action in Cali... Angelo Cabrera (Dunnellon) finished in 6th in the 100m in 10.83 and Dunnellon's 4x400 relay finished in 5th place 3:22.94. MileSplit was on-site at the Arcadia Invitational and results, photos, and videos are being uploaded.

In a mainly low-key and informal opening day meet at Bolles School in Jacksonville, Bishop Kenny's two leading meet--Colin Barker and Michael Wallace--lit it up. Colin Barker's 4:16 1600m mark would make even the state's finest runners smile as a season-ending performance, but he opened 2010 with it! Teammate Michael Wallace had a nice run himself: winning the 800 in 1:57. More highlights and full results posted...

This weekend a couple thousand of runners, including many of the best in the state of Florida, will be headed to an out-of-the way ranch in dimly populated North Pasco County. Down the small dirt, wooden path they will venture, hoping their bus does not get stuck. And then finally over the railroad tracks, the woods open up and they will see it: the beautiful Little Everglades Ranch.
Some hate the course, some love it. But there is no denying it is one of the most beautiful spaces of authentic Florida that you will find. No tourists. No urban sprawl. Just a serene natural setting filled with the greenest grass, wetland ponds, blue herons and other water birds, along with a few hundred head of cattle!
2096 athletes and 80 schools are entered, coming from as far away as Key West and Fort Walton Beach. Some of them are perennial powers. Others are small but developing programs. All coming together for this preview of the season culminating state championship meet just over a month from now.
Here is your first look at the competition.

Belen Jesuit may be favored on paper, but a little reality check shows it's much closer. Tampa Jesuit may have its leader back afterall and give rise to the Tigers' title hopes to upset Belen. That is if Bishop Kenny doesn't upset them both! It's going to be a hot one!

Four of the top distance runners from the 2007-2008 Cross Country and Track seasons came from the class of 2010. In their first two years of high school, these young men have amassed a gaudy amount of medals. Combined, they have captured five individual state championships, one state runner up, and seven top five state performances. Flrunners.com contributor Kristin McWilliams asks the same questions to each of them. How did they differ? How were they similar? Find out!

Joe Franlin took his time and paced himself, as the elite field in the high school seeded division of the Boys 3200m at the FSU Relays thinned out. And then he dropped the hammer big time, picked his way through the pack, and then blew the doors off on the last lap. He finished with a 9:15 over Connor Revord. So much for the theory the Florida state meet 1600 meter record holder is only an 800-1600 guy. Franklin has always worked to show his versatility and break out of anyone who would pigeon hole his talent into one event.
Going into the race, reportedly Franklin was reluctant to even run the event. But at the insistance of his coach and his father he entered anyway instead of focusing on the mile! Glad he did so we get a chance to see this gem of a race!
