While riding to church on Sunday morning, my sister, Meara, handed me a note she’d written that read: "love Sundays because I get to praise God. Then, He does awesome things for me.” Because she is only seven years old, I was shocked by what I had just read. I turned the paper over and the note continued: “Yesterday March 1 I went to a track meet and I ran two races the 800 and the 400. I came in first place in both. I got two golden medals. Also yesterday my brother ran two races and he [came] in first also and got two HUGE trophies.”
Not to be outdone, she then wrote: “But I got a ladybug. It flew on my pants for good luck.”
She is so competitive! When we got out of the car, I picked her up and told her that I was really proud of her and that I will see her run next weekend. The fact that she praises God and realizes that He answers prayers made this past weekend a blessing. She’s been running track since she was four years old. She’s a fantastic middle distance runner. Hopefully, she’ll start sprinting by middle school!
I am grateful for my first place finishes in the 100m and 200m at the 2014 Sam Burley HOF Invitational. This was my first meet of the season. I was somewhat pleased with my performance. But, I will be the first to say that my times were not what I expected. I’m back in the lab on Monday to work out some of the glitches I experienced.
As an athlete, I realize that all performances will not be great ones. Also, sometimes you will win and sometimes you will not. I gave it my best, so I’m not going to be too hard on myself. I was thrilled, however, by the performances of my longtime South Dade Express and Miami Gardens Xpress teammates. Each of them showed great strength and form. I wish them loads of success.
Note to Meara, my awesome little sister: Yes God does awesome things. That’s why we praise him everyday! I love you.
