In Her Own Words: Kendall Ellis - The Week That Was, Senior Year, and Trackheads

Hey everybody! Kendall back again for my weekly blog. Last weekend Saint Thomas Aquinas competed at the Sam Burley Invitational. Congratulations to the boys for winning overall and for my girls coming in second.

Now, before the season even started I’ve been saying that records and impressive times would be ran and boy were records shattered at Sam Burley. This meet seems to have grown a lot in comparison to recent years, schools from all over the state came to compete. Lucky for us, the meet ran relatively fast and we were able to finish in a timely fashion, which is always a blessing. At Sam Burley US #1 times were put up, season PRs were set, and athletes showed up and showed out. I’m so proud of each and every athlete and team who broke a record or set a nation best time. I’m calling it now 2014 will be a very impressive and competitive year in track and field, not only in South Florida, but nationwide.

Anyways, this week STA has a dual meet Wednesday at Hallandale. This weekend we’ll be at the Miramar Invitational. On a fun note, the seniors get to go to Universal and Islands of Adventure for Grad Day on Thursday! Perks of being a senior.

Let it be said that senioritis is real. Oh so very real. It is hard enough managing the social, athletic, and academic aspects of life but throw being a senior into the mix and you’re in for quite the year. Remember your focus, we’re student athletes, student comes before athlete regardless of which one you like being more. Handle your business in the classroom so you can handle your business on the field and track. I’ll admit the motivation and dedication I have on the track I really have to force myself to have in the classroom, especially now as a senior. Call me crazy but I’d really rather go run an 800 than study for a Statistics AP or Macro-Economics AP test. To my fellow class of 2014, somehow some way bear with me as we wrap up these last few months and head on towards our diplomas.

Lastly, want to mention something that interests me - trackheads. Don’t misread me, I do in fact mean trackheads. Better known as trackies, these are people who are track nation to the fullest. They know who’s who in the track world, their times, the best meets to go to, the latest spikes, every last detail regarding track - all without the help of milesplit. As someone who never really knew much about the track game, I’m amazed at how much trackheads know.

Best of luck in your training and upcoming meets and remember to go for the gold. Why? Because victory is best served gold.
