Friday Focus: Brandon Marquez - Running Unattached, Unfazed

Brandon Marquez has been competing unattached for the past two years. As a freshman, he was third at the 4A Cross Country Finals and 8th outdoors in the 3,200m. One might wonder if Marquez has gone MIA? However, he proved he was still a presence on the track, after winning the 1,600m at the Trinity Prep Distance Showcase in 4:15.54, a new personal best, and a mark that would rank him sixth in the state. Not bad for his first meet of 2015. See what he had to say after the meet.

"I've been good. I slowly got back into training, and everything's been good so far. It feels a little weird that everyone's ending their season and I've technically just started. I haven't been doing anything out of the ordinary as far as workouts go. I am just mixing in a blend of long and short stuff and keeping my body strong. It was a good sign to PR in my first mile of the season and hopefully with a few more weeks of training under my belt I can do it again at Golden South and put myself in the best position possible."

Marquez has his focus on Golden South and depending on how that goes will see what other meets he will compete in. Right now, he has one of the top times in the field and could be a dark horse to win the meet, and the automatic qualifier to the Dream Mile in New York City that comes along.
