Florida Athletes have a Big First Weekend

Florida's 2026 outdoor high school season opened with a strong first weekend, producing performances that already rank nationally in the current Top 10, even though only a handful of states have begun official outdoor competition.

Dunbar senior Kobe Johnson leads Florida with 14.15 (+0.0) from the Dunbar Tiger Classic, and that mark sits 5th nationally early in the season.

100m: Florida dominates the early national list. Jacob Thomas (Flanagan, 2027) clocked 10.41 (2.9) to rank No. 1 in the U.S., with Braylen Bennett (American Heritage, 2026) at 10.43 (2.8) and DJ Dobie (Lakeland, 2026) at 10.49 also in the top three nationally. Florida accounts for six of the current U.S. top 10.

200m: Davion Crumitie (Rickards, 2027) leads Florida at 20.72 (-0.4), followed by Zamarii Sanders (Cardinal Newman, 2026) at 20.83 (1.9).

400m: The Louie Bing Invitational 400m was especially deep: six athletes broke 49.00, and two went sub-48. Ka'Nard Boucard (Miramar, 2026) 47.60 and Jason Thomas (Plantation, 2027) 47.73. Those times rank 4th and 5th nationally, with Joe Licata (Cardinal Newman) 48.08 and Omaree Baptiste (East River) 48.20 also in the current U.S. top 10.

400mH: Florida owns the national leaderboard in the 400mH, occupying Nos. 1-9 nationally, led by Alijah McKenzie (Flanagan, 2028) 54.79, with Stone Stroking (McArthur, 2026) 55.07 and Aidyn Mompremier (Miami Norland, 2026) 55.21 close behind.

800m: Marcelo Mantecon (Belen Jesuit, 2027) ran 1:53.94, which ranks 2nd in the U.S. early.

1600m: Florida has multiple early sub-4:20s-Mantecon 4:17.12 (also 4th nationally), Landon Watkins (Sickles, 2028) 4:19.30 (6th nationally), and Will Moss (Montverde, 2027) 4:19.66 (10th nationally).

Field Highlights

Javelin: Florida posted a big early mark with Gabriel Carey (Citrus, 2026) 87.03m / 285-06.25.

Jumps: O'hara Tommie (Northeast, 2026) is already a national factor-23-7.46 (-1.5) in the long jump (3rd nationally) and 47-0.96 (0.3) in the triple jump (2nd nationally, over 47 feet).

Relays

4x100: Dillard currently holds down the nation's top spot with a 40.66Centennial HS is ninth with a 41.48.

4x400: Nationally, in the 4x400m relay, Dillard is currently ranked No. 3 (3:16.84). Florida teams hold down the No. Sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth places. Christopher Columbus 6th (3:18.01), Miami Northwestern 7th (3:18.01), Rickards 8th (3:18.53), Centennial 9th (3:18.71), and Plantation 10th (3:18.78).  The Louie Bing final featured Dillard, Christopher Columbus, Miami Northwestern, Centennial, and Plantation.

4x800: Currently, Florida teams are nationally ranked 1-7 and 9th. The top four times came at Louie Bing. Flanagan leads the way with an 8:02.61, followed by Taravella 8:06.41, Christopher Columbus 8:09.85, and Dillard 8:10.01. At the Dunbar Tigers Classic, Dunbar ran 8:11.39, and Aubrey Rogers went 8:11.69. Chiles went 8:13.54 at the Chiles Track and Field Relays.
