Commentary: The view has become MUCH clearer now! Holy Trinity and Oak Hall were neck and neck at Great American. Providence is still rock solid with a strong showing at Bale-n-Trail. Maclay moves up a hair after a great run at FSU. Trinity Prep continues to move up with a win at flrunners 12's Invitational race and most of the rest ran there, too, for outstanding head-to-head comparisons. Lakeland Christian is the biggest mover, entering the polls at #7. Pope John Paul II and First Academy also joined the top ranks.

Commentary: We have a very interesting development here… Candiano takes the lead, by a hair. Last week I put Wollrath and Seymour as 1a and 1b because they won't face each other until state and they were close, but now I'm putting Candiano and Wollrath in the same 1a/1b situation because their times were within a second of each other, though on different courses. Some of last week's new entries got pushed out as the veterans started finding their grooves. You can also see why the top teams are on top - many of their girls are in here!

4A Girls Rankings |
By: Ryan Raposo, John A. Ferguson HS - rraposo@dadeschools.net
Team Rankings: |
|||
Commentary: Almost a month into the cross country season and things are heating up rapidly wth many shake-ups in the top ten this week! Some teams have shown their strength, others are starting to feel the strain of the season, and there's plenty of competition in the good 'ol region of death like always! So before I break down the team rankings, let me express how team averages only play a small role in the rankings process (particularly because I'm one of the most critical course adjusters anyone's ever met. I'm the guy who walks around meets with a measuring wheel for fun). So certain courses like Chain of Lakes (Flrunners), which has tremendous weather conditions on top of it, and Great American, will ALWAYS yield ridiculously fast times when compared to UF and FSU, and even more so when compared to Fleet Feet or Larry & Penny in Miami (Falcons Invite). So please take all of that into consideration when looking at both the team and individual rankings for this week. Now enough of my jabbering, here are the rankings! P.S.- If I missed anything, like a team running without one of their top 5 this weekend, please let me know!
Team Name, Region | (Prev.) | Comments:
T-1. | Ferguson, 4 | (T-4) | 19:19 @ Flrunners ROC, 2nd place- After a tremendous performance at Flrunners, the Falcons have jumped their way to the #1 slot in 4A. The two things separating them from everyone else in the state right now is their fast spread and their depth. As of right now, Ferguson can put seven girls inside most other team's 4th or 5th runner, and that's a huge advantage when it comes to scoring. |
T-1. | Plant, 2 | (1) | 19:50 @ FSU Invitational, 2nd place- Before everyone jumps on the Ferguson bandwagon, people need to quickly remember the Plant girls. Besides handily beating the Falcons at Deja Vu, this defending state team put together one heck of a performance at FSU, and they're a strong pack team in their own right. So assuming Flrunners runs about 30 seconds fast, Plant holds true to their prior ranking staying at #1. |
3. | Hagerty, 1 | (T-2) | 19:51 @ Flrunners ROC, 4th place- The Hagerty girls keep getting stronger, rising to the challenge, but even with their great performance at Flrunners they've shifted to 3rd. Unforunately, that's the kind of year it's going to be in 4A. If you want to make the top five, you need to keep progressing from week to week and hope no one progresses more than you did. But they're definitely knocking on that podium position door. |
4. | Spruce Creek, 1 | (7) | 20:00 @ Flrunners ROC, 6th place (minus one runner)- Just a notch behind the Huskies, these Hawks have worked their way up to the top five and I know that's where they want to stay! Hard work and a strong spread is also keeping this team near the top and it's giving them the advantage over the teams directly underneath them. Look for Spruce Creek to continue getting stronger. |
T-5. | Olympia, 1 | (T-2) | 19:43 @ Great American ROC, 14th place- Thanks to a tremendous 1-2 punch, the Titans are working with a skewed team average, but they're proving each week why they are possibly in the title hunt. Right now the only thing holding them back is a huge spread, particularly between runners 4 and 5 and if they can't close that two minute gap, it'll be tought to stay in the top five. |
T-5. | Dr. Phillips, 1 | (9) | 19:40 @ Flrunners ROC, 5th place- Thanks to a strong Bridget Blake, these Panthers are dealing with the same problem that Olympia has; a skewed average and a huge spread. Now although their larger spread is a bit larger, Dr. Phillips still has a better 5th girl than Olympia, so it's really too close to separate these two teams that are so comparable. |
7. | St. Thomas Aquinas, 3 | (T-4) | 20:34 @ UF Mountain Dew, 3rd place (without #1)- If there is any team out there that is ridiculously under-ranked, it's St. Thomas. Unfortunately their #1, Christina Kalis, injured her hip at Spanish River and hasn't been running competitively since. Because of this, their team has dropped in the rankings. But believe me, once she's back on track, there is no reason why STA couldn't be ranked first in 4A. |
8. | Lourdes Academy, 4 | (6) | 20:59 @ Fleet Feet, 1st place- Another very under-ranked team is Lourdes. This team is loaded with talent, but just hasn't been running up to par lately. A couple of minor injuries have set back the Bobcats a notch, but once they piece everything together, this is definitely a top five team with podium potential waiting to happen. |
9. | Lake Mary, 1 | (NR) | 20:26 @ Flrunners ROC, 11th place- Making a big jump into the rankings, Lake Mary, like many Region 1 teams, finds themselves in that hard concept to grasp position: that although they might be top 10-12 in the state, their region might be so tough that they end up stuck at home. But so far, they're running very well, and currently find themselves in the top 10. So keep it up girls! |
10. | Sarasota Riverview, 2 | (8) | 20:32 @ Land O Lakes, 1st place- Picking up a solid win at Land O Lakes, the Rams need to keep working on closing their pack and slowly keep dropping their team average down. The competition has gotten extremely tough for the top ten this year in 4A, and they'll need to run their hardest to stay where they are. |
11. | Mandarin, 1 | (NR) | 20:41 @ Bale-n-Trail, 7th place- These Mustangs are feeling the same Region 1 pressures that Lake Mary is feeling, but with a little bit of relief now that they're back in the rankings. Keep working hard to stay here ladies! There are plenty of teams that are waiting for the right opportunity to move on up! |
12. | St. Petersburg, 2 | (12) | 21:14 @ Flrunners Invitational, 12th place |
13. | Freedom (Tampa), 2 | (13) | 21:35 @ Don Bishop, 1st place |
14. | Wharton 2 | (T-15) | 21:28 @ Flrunners Invitational, 6th place |
15. | Cypress Bay, 3 | (16) | 21:33 @ Flrunners Invitational, 14th place |
16. | Dwyer, 3 | (18) | 21:34 @ Flrunners Invitational, 10th place |
17. | Palm Harbor University, 2 | (14) | 22:18 @ UF Mountain Dew, 19th place |
18. | Park Vista, 3 | (NR) | 22:47 @ Fleet Feet, 6th place |
19. | Spanish River, 3 | (17) | 22:00 @ Flrunners Invitational, 20th place |
20. | South Dade, 4 | (19) | 23:02 @ Falcons Invitational, 4th place |
21. | Coral Reef, 4 | (22) | 22:01 @ Flrunners Invtational, 23rd place (minus #2 runner) |
22. | Jupiter, 3 | (20) | 22:48 @ Fleet Feet, 10th place |
23. | Varela, 4 | (23) | 23:37 @ Falcons Invitational, 6th place |
24. | Sunset, 4 | (24) | 23:12 @ Flrunners Invitational, 30th place |
Upcoming Teams: | |||
Lyman, 1 | (NR) | 20:41 @ Flrunners ROC, 16th place
Colonial, 1 | (NR) | 20:54 @ Great American Red, 8th place

Commentary: For the individual rankings most of it was pretty easy to piece together because most of the athletes ran at Flrunners, but for athletes at other meets, there were some time adjustments due to the variety of courses. Team Rankings: |

Commentary: After a big weekend of meets the rankings get shaken up a little bit with the Top 2 keeping their strangle hold on their spots. 5 NR teams have moved into the top 15 after the top 5 teams any of the next 10 can be interchanged. 6th has an AVG if 18:11 and 15th has an AVG of 18:39. 1A will be fun to watch at States and see what pack of 5 move up together. If PK Young stays healthy, the Dynamic Duo of Trinity's will be broken up for the first time Since 2006 when guess who, thats right PK Young split them up from the 1-2 spot with help from 1A State Champion and Runner's Up Micheal and Geoffrey Anderson. the next 2 weeks the teams seem bent on avoiding one another with TP going against the tops in the other divisions at PreState, and PK Young and Holy Trinity stayin close to home to gear up for the State series. Good luck men this will be an interesting race to the top. Can PK Young do it again like in 2006?

10 | Pensacola Christian - 1 | (6) | 18:29 AVG with only Carlson and Balentine under 18:30 they will need help to not drop further in the rankings |

Commentary: Daniel Moore picked up the gauntlet as no one is even close, with the only sub 15 performance in the State so far. After watching Flrunners and how Westlake battled the Trinity Prep boys I think he is the front runner for 2nd place and his name immortalized in the annals of the FHSAA record book. Gousse and Salas need to step up and push PKY back if they want to be on the podium again as a team. With HT, TP, and PKY holding 16 of the 25 spots it is defnately a 3 team race. That 3 team race will make the individuals race to the top more interesting as they will have to battle at practice to move up the list. the next 2 weeks bring in Disney, Prestate and a slew of other meets for data against the top 25's from other divisions. Good luck to you all.

2A Boys Rankings |

Team Rankings: |
|||
Commentary: Here we go back to where we were in week 1 with Bishop Kenny and Ransom Everglades at 1A and 1B, though this time reversed. They are THAT close right now, and likely to be THAT close in November. Kenny impresses with a 16 second gap winning at Bale n Trail. Ransom has two runners with times in the top 5 among all AA runners, and has an improving gap including an 8th grader at 17:26. Though Nature Coast did not run this past weekend, they and Immokalee are solid at 3 and 4. Cocoa Beach showed improvement and moving up the ranks with a strong showing at FL Runners. This ranking has still been tough with debatable courses ( Mitchell), muddy courses ( DeJa Vu) and a Dew Inviational with 500 runners that clearly skewed certain performances. On top of that last weekend was SAT saturday and some seniors clearly did not run ( presumably for that reason)
Team Name | (Prev.) | Comments:
1A | Bishop Kenny | (1) | A 16 second gap with 5 runners under 17 minutes ( most with p.r.s). Kenny has the front seat right now |
1B | Ransom Everglades | (3) | With two runners rather than just Irigoyen among the elite, it will be interesting to see if and when rest of team closes the gap |
3. | Nature Coast | (2) | Very deep team with small 1-5 gap Had strong second place at Land O lakes. No "top" individual yet, but if entire group drops… look out |
4. | Immokalee | Strong showing in FL Runners Race of Champions with two runners in top 15 times right now. This team dropping times quickly
5. | Cocoa Beach | A 22nd second gap completes a strong showing in varsity race at FL Runners
6. | Robinson | Strong showing wit out number one man Sharp running this weekend
7. | Pensacola Catholic | Still has 4 sub 18:00 runners
8. | Berkeley Prep | Strong race at Great American… very solid at 1 and 2 runenrs… watch this team… they probably should be higher but have been beaten head to head by others on list to date
9. | Bolles | Big improvement at Bale n Trail ….. 4 runners under 18:00
10. | Astronaut | This team has 4 fast harriers… dominated division at FL Runners. Any 5th coming? If so they will be higher up this list
11. | Marianna | (NR) | Ran with only 5 runners at Bale n Trail |
12. | Lake Nona | (NR) | Improving quickly |
13. | Lincoln Park | Finally opened up, this team will improve
14. | Rockledge | Hickey leads the way
15. | Eastside | Looking they are on track for first state birth |
Individual Rankings: |
|||
Commentary: Now that there are over 30 runners under 17:00 , it is apparent that the depth in this state division is improving dramatically. Along with that depth, comes the difficulty of assessing the legitimacy of courses like Mitchell, Deja Vu ( mud), and a ridiculosuly overcrowded Mountain Dew race where 500 runners were trampling one another. There have also been few head to head matchups among the top individuals. And despite FL Runners' attempt to rate courses and legitimize times, I am an old timer, ands believe that XC is a sport of head to head match ups rather than times. Nonetheless, here is my best attempt to sort out the top 25. Do not be offended if you think I missed someone. Let me know and I will watch closely over the middle of the season.
Athlete Name – Team | Time, Comments:
1. | Argishti Gazari - Anclote | With his only blip occurring in a 500 man field at Mountain Dew, Gazari is undefeated at 3 other inviatationals. He and Irigoyen are very close or so it it appears
2. | Bert Irigoyen - Ransom Everglades | Irigoyen wins Ferguson Invite... then puts out top AA time in state…. but is yet to hit his stride
3. | Brian Sharp - Robinson | Didn’t run this weekend, but is the closest to challenger to the "big two"
4. | Alex Kerrigan- Pensacola Catholic | Has consistently been in mid 16s for 3 big meets
5. | Matthew Harford - Episcopal | Big p.r. race at Fl Runners
6. | Billy Scola - Ransom Everglades | Sub 16:30 at FSU and FL Runners… ready to challenge the top 5 with one more breakthrough
7. | Jean Deceus - Immokalee | Another solid race at Fl Runners ROC
8. | Lionel DeLa Cruz - Immokalee | Actually beat Deceus last week could be the faster of this duo
9. | Dillon Hodge- Pedro Menendez | No results on Direct Athletcs but appears to be lurking as a top challenger.Won St Aug meet going 400 meters off course. Track Times predict he is "up there"
10. | Alex Main - Berkeley Prep | Big race at Great American
11. | Michael Barr - Bishop Kenny | Number one runner of a close pack
12. | Patrick Maher - Bisphop Kenny | Right behind Barr
13. | Nick Palermo - North Broward Prep | Seems to hitting stride… strong race at FL Runners stil a sleeping ginat with a 15:49 p.r.

15. | Shaun Majumdar - Berkeley Prep | Strong at Great American
16. | Miguel Casiano Lehigh | 16:37 at North Port early on
17. | Jims Thimogene - American Heritage | Fast times on slow courses
18. | Alec Clark - West Florida Tech | Strong at FSU
19. | Cecil Vignutti - Bisphop Kenny | Separating Kenny guys is very hard just as it will be hard to separate in a race, only seconds back of Barr
20 | David Yarbrough - Bisjop kenny | Ditto
21. | Tim O'laughlin- Jesuit | P.R.ed at Land o Lakes… could be a lot higher than this
22. | Nick Papa - Lake Highland Prep | Is defending region champion….. still
23. | Stanley Linton - Wakulla | Strong at FSU… watch this one I have been told
24. | Chris Sorrick - Anclote | Has run two strong races could be higher than this
25. | Cody Van Natter- Nature Coast | First of a very close team pack
26 | Austin Cox- Lincoln Park | Finally opened up |

Team Rankings: |

Commentary: We had some great racing the last 2 weekends with UF, FSU, NorthPort,FlRunners, Bail n Trail and Great American. Belen Jesuit took it to another level at FlRunners placing 4 runners under 16:00 minutes and dominating everyone like they did the week before at UF. FWB appears to be the second best team in 3A and then it gets complicated as Bartram Trail, BTW and Chiles take turns knocking each other off week to week. Things just got a bit tighter down south as Naples finally gets the best of Estero and Ft Myers is lurking. That will be some region meet in a few weeks as you have Gates, Rojas , Miranda Pelletier , Brown and Shearman all running real well right now. I throw myself at the mercy of the court this week as my wife and I just had our first child this past Thursday. I did the best I could but with daddy doodies I have not slept in a week. I promise to be better in the weeks to come. So be gentle if I overlooked someone.
Team Name, Region | Comments:
1. | Belen Jesuit - 4 | 4 under 16:00 @ Fl Runners just dominating the field makes them best in the state

15. | Chamberlin - 2 | 11th @ UF with 17:35 avg and 6th in Invite @ FlRunners without del Monte |
Individual Rankings: |
|||
Commentary: Elliot showed once again the last 2 weeks he is tops in Florida but has seen the gap shrink. Carlos Miranda announced his presence with authority with a spectacular 15:22 at Fl Runners. The always game Rojas from Estero stepped up big with a 15:31 and Herbert Gates finally realized he belongs with the Florida elite and showed it with a 15:40 clocking. Thomas Howell was a worthy challenger to Daniel Moore at FSU and runs 15:44 winning at Gulf Coast Stampede. Pre States is the next check point for most teams and will paint a clearer picture heading into November.

Team Name | (Prev.) | Comments:
1. | Colonial | (1) | Undefeated in 4A!!! It is clear that even if you run well (like Olympia did) and come close, it just isn't going to be enough to beat Colonial. |
2. | Columbus | (2) | UF seemed like a perfect chance for the Hellions to take the # 1 spot, but they fell short to Colonial by 5 pts. Look for the Hellions to have a breakout race come Pre-State. |
3. | Olympia | (6) | Olympia has a legit shot to stun the State and pull off the 4A State Title but Pre-State will be a true test for this Squad. |
4. | HB Plant | (4) | No one seems to have noticed, but HB Plant had an amazing win at Flrunners with a 16:38 Team Average |
5. | St. Thomas | (3) | They have yet to put together a complete race from #1-5 but when they do, watch out St. Thomas is still my sleeper for 2011. |
6. | Spruce Creek | (8) | It is time to believe in the Creek a 16:49 Team average can even set them up for a top 5 finish come November |
7. | John I Leonard | (7) | As a team they are continuing to improve and Anderson Charles continues to finish at the top of every race. |
8. | Winter Park | (5) | The Park still has a lot of fight in them and more specifically Billy Anguish, he was impressive this weekend at Flrunners. |
9. | Park Vista | (NR) | Half way into the season, and Park Vista has made some strides in the right direction lead by Ryan White. |
10. | Sunset | (15) | Sunset is continuing to prove they are a solid team that can finish top 10 come November. |

Please remember that all of these rankings are done by volunteers and are meant to increase the overall enjoyment of the sport for athletes, coaches, parents, and fans. They are just for fun and should not have a lot of weight put on them. But if you have issues (such as a missed athlete or team), please email the individual pollster for your classification and gender, or direct any major concerns towards the State Rankings Representative: Coach Ryan Raposo- rraposo@dadeschools.net
