ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) –UCF’s Caryl Smith Gilbert was named the South Region Women’s Outdoor Head Coach of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Monday afternoon.

UCF head track and field coach Caryl Smith Gilbert has been named the jumps coach of Team USA at the 2009 IAAF World Outdoor Championships in Berlin, Germany, USA Track & Field announced recently. The event will run this year from Aug. 15-23 at the Berlin Olympic Stadium.
Jeff Chakouian has been named as an assistant coach with the UCF track & field program, head coach Caryl Smith Gilbert announced Monday. Chakouian has spent the previous three seasons at Illinois State University and will be responsible for working with the throwers at UCF.
In just her second season at the helm of the UCF track and field program, head coach Caryl Smith Gilbert has been named the 2009 South Region Coach of the Year, the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Monday. Smith Gilbert won the honor based on a vote of the region’s head coaches.
Freshman Sheila Paul (Lauderdale Lakes, Fla.) posted NCAA regional qualifying marks in both the 100- and 200-meter dash as the UCF track and field team completed action with a strong day two of the UCF Invitational Saturday at the UCF Track and Field Complex. Junior Kelsey Poljansek (Milton, Kan.) was also impressive, shattering the school record in the discus.
Headlined by American record holder Tyson Gay, a star-studded field is expected to compete Saturday on day two of the UCF Relays at the UCF Track and Field Complex. Tianna Madison, Lauryn Williams and Aleen Bailey are also expected at the event.
Led by junior Kelsey Poljansek’s (Milton, Kan.) school record in the shot put, the UCF track and field team fared well on a light day one of action in the UCF Invitational Friday evening at the UCF Track and Field Complex. Senior Dione Thomas (Jacksonville, Fla.)also had a strong performance in the long jump, notching an NCAA regional qualifying mark.
Getting individual event championships from senior Dione Thomas (Jacksonville, Fla.) and freshman Sheila Paul (Lauderdale Lakes, Fla.), the UCF track and field team finished in third place Saturday at the Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships at Yeoman Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Houston. The third-place finish shatters the seventh-place finish in 2006 for the program’s highest at the indoor meet since joining C-USA.
With a successful regular season in the books, the UCF track and field team heads to Houston, Texas to compete in the Conference USA Indoor Championships on Friday and Saturday. The event will be held at Yeoman Fieldhouse and hosted by the University of Houston. The Knights will look to improve on an eighth-place finish from a season ago and post the program’s highest finish in the conference championships.
