Golden South: What to look for this weekend May 26, 2009

In a lot of ways Golden South is a meet in trouble.  It continues to bring in some of the nation's top athletes from out of state, this year including national leaders Jack Whitt (PV) and Charlene Lipsey (800), but fails to bring in even many of the best talent in its own state.  The result is that many events this year will be great to watch... but instead of a great competition, maybe will be a great exhibition of a single great athlete or team running away from the pack. We as Floridians should be embracing this meet if at all possible and getting it on our schedules.  Otherwise, the opportunity is going to be gone and Florida's only national-level post-season meet will be history.  This event has produced so many Olympians over the years and used to be a staple of elite athletes continuing their seasons. I am excited to see some of the nation's best this weekend, but hoping the entry list fills out more and surprises me when I get there.  Here is a preview of who to look for winning each event based on the current entries...   

Golden South: Whitt Flies Past Meet Record May 31, 2009

Boys Highlights:  Jack Whitt (OK) goes 17-10 to take down meet record, makes three solid attempts at 18-3.5 national record (video interview).  Dentarius Locke tweaks hammy in 200 prelims, hobbles to 10.51 100m track record, scratches 200 finals.  Neamen Wise doubles in hurdles 13.99, 52.76.  Miami Pace 40.65 4x100.   Girls Highlights:  Octavious Freeman (FL), only a sophomore, wins 100 (11.48) and 200 (23.78), 100 is new meet record.  Charlene Lipsey (NY) wins 800 easily in 2:09.53.  Brianna Fraizer 54.56 wins 400 over Donna-Lee Hylton 54.69, after winning the triple jump (39-0) earlier in day.  Oak Ridge just off season best with 46.39 track record in 4x100.  Caitlin Schuessler clears 12 feet in pole vault.
