Brasovan 26th at World Junior XC
Wellington High senior Ashley Brasovan travelled to Amman, Jordan this past weekend to compete at the Cross Country World Championships. She was one of five representing the United States in the Junior Women's 6K race. Ashley finished in 26th place with a time of 21:55, as the second American in the race. According to reports on the forum, Brasovan was competing with an injury and as a result may not see any further action this season. Let's hope that's not the case and we get to see more of our former Footlocker National champ before her high school season is concluded and she leaves us for Duke University! South Top 12 Individual Rankings: Brasovan & Kroeger Look to Dazzle
Last fall the Foot Locker South girls squad ran strong from start to finish in San Diego, scoring a 1-2 finish up top and tying the Northeast girls for the team trophy. This year eight of the ten female Foot Locker qualifiers return, led by defending national champion Ashley Brasovan (FL) and 2006 national champion Kathy Kroeger (TN) (pictured above by John Herzog). The boys side will follow the lead of '07 Foot Locker qualifiers CJ Brown (TX) and Thomas Porter (VA). These could very well be the strongest boys and girls contingents for the South squad in some time.

As the male and female winners of the Gatorade track and field and cross country Player of the Year awards, each athlete was put up a five-star hotel, got to mingle with such notable athletes as Matt Leinhart, Greg Oden, Allyson Felix and Candace Parker, and took part in an awards ceremony that preceded the ESPY Awards. The Gatorade Player of the Year program drew to an end, naming the male and female national winners. Read about Brasovan's and Derrick's experience, as the two took time out of their busy schedules to talk with MileSplit.

Locke, Howard, Brasovan are Top Florida Finishers at NON on Friday
Ashley Brasovan may not have won tonight, but her battle was impressive coming off of the 16:18 meet record less than 24 hours before. The Girls Seeded 2 Mile race was a sit and wait dramafest. You felt like at any moment someone was going to blow it out and space out the pack... it never happened. The super-talented field stayed bunched up for the ENTIRE race. Ashley found herself from very early on boxed in and stranded toward the back or middle of the pack. Since they never stringed out it made it tough for Ashley to get into any kind of position. She spent a lot of time in lane 2 and 3 trying to get around, which took even more out of her already tired legs. The double just wasn't meant to be. Neely Spence of Pennsylvania was the victor of the sit and wait, which was a pretty safe conclusion given her speed. Dentarious Locke was the top Florida placer of the night. After coming out of the prelims as the top seed (10.43), he took it all the way to the tape. In a photo finish, he was just outleaned by Hunter Furr of North Carolina 10.56 to 10.60 to finish in second place. David Howard of Spruce Creek concluded his high school career with a 14.15 in the 110 Hurdles finals for fourth place. We have a full list of all Florida finishers tonight's events. Look for race videos from all of these races coming throughout the weekend. Interview with Ashley after the 2 Mile | Boys 100 Finals | Boys 110H | Girls Seeded 2 Mile Full Coverage on MileSplit US -
Nike Outdoor Kicks off Tonight; Brasovan, 5K at 8PM
The first events of this year's Nike Outdoor Nationals go off tonight in Greensboro, North Carolina. The 5000 meters will start at 8PM EST. While Florida has no dogs in the fight in the boys race, three girls will be representing the Sunshine State on the girls side: Jessica Butler (St. Thomas Aquinas), Jana Stolting (Maclay), and Ashley Brasovan (Wellington). While there are a lot of excellent girls in this race, including Jessica Butler who is fresh off of a big PR road 5K last month of 17:54, let's face it Brasovan is in a league of her own in this race. It is hers to win. The national record in this event belongs to Caitlin Chock. By the end of the night it may very well belong to Ashley. The time of 15:52 seems extraordinary--and sure it's nothing to sneeze at--but let's remember Ashley has put down multiple 16:40 times over her career on the grass. If she's feeling up to it the meet record should be squarely in her grasp. One has to expect that if she is feeling good (and the pace is right) tonight she will go after it. Especially after having missed the state record attempts in the 3200 earlier this spring she's probably eager for a page in the record books here! If she is not feeling up to snuff or falls off record pace, I'd assume she will pull up and put on auto-pilot for the win to save for tomorrow. She is also entered in the two mile race at 7:45pm on Friday. That one should be a lot more competitive with girls like Kathy Kroeger (NY), Neely Spence (PA), and Emiliy Lipari (NY). LIVE VIDEO ON NOW!!!!

Nike Outdoor Nationals Thursday Coverage - Brasovan, Haile Win 5k Titles
The first day of Nike Outdoor Nationals is about to start a fabulous weekend of action. Tonight the only high school races were the boys and girls 5k runs. From start to finish the 5k races were quite interesting, but in opposite ways. Foot Locker champion Ashley Brasovan (FL) ran away from the girls field, running by herself after two laps, winning in 16:18.53, U.S. #6 all-time. On the boys side NIN 5k champion Solomon Haile (MD) continued his impressive streak of national appearances, winning the boys race in 14:38.23, tying the meet record. Haile showed his strength at the mile, jumping to the lead and slowly lowering the pace. His tractics worked perfectly and he took home another Nike Nationals title. Such great results signify great things ahead this weekend in Greensboro. 5K Race Videos by Brandon Miles: Girls 5K Section #1 - Girls 5K Section #2 (Seeded) - Boys 5K Section #1 - Boys 5K Section #2 (Seeded) Ashley Brasovan Interview w/ Announcer / Solomon Haile Interview

Brasovan, Butler Win Heats at Nike Outdoor 5K; Brasovan is MR 16:18
The two girls from Florida, Ashley Brasovan and Jessica Butler, won their respective heats tonight at the Nike Outdoor Nationals 5K. Butler won the first heat with nice closing speed to come from behind. Brasovan left no doubt in the 5K running all alone the entire race and basically lapping every girl in the field of the fast heat. She set a meet record of 16:18.53. We had live video of the race tonight. Will have plenty of videos, articles, and photos up on the national portal: Thursday Coverage Interview w/Ashley | Ashley's Race | Jessica's Race | All Videos

Wow! That's all that can really be said to sum up this past weekend's performances across the nation. With great weather, peak performances and deep fields, some of the results simply impressed. With nearly ten seperate state meets to cover, and numerous other top-tier invitationals, we've decided to merge it all into one big article, a new feature we're going to call The Awards Stand. Each week for the rest of the season we'll recap what the top performances were in each event grouping. See who made it this week. (Photo of Texas' Kyle Clemons by Alex Aldaco)

Weekend Preview: BYU Invitational, Five State Meets Headline Weekend Action
Five seperate states host state meets this weekend as Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana and Oklahoma all crown individual and team champions. While Florida should produce some of the best and deepest results of the weekend, every state meet has at least a few national caliber individuals worth watching. Along with the state championships, the BYU Invitational and Anchorage Invitational should provide some fantastic marks as well. -
News & Notes: Big Throws in Oklahoma, Arizona Sprinters Shine
On each of the coasts this past weekend big meets took place that grabbed much of the attention, while throughout the Heartland and Midwest meets were cancelled due to inclement weather. However, a duo of meets stood out through their results, as the Sun Angel Invitational (AZ) and John Jacobs (OK) Invitational posted some national level results. Leading the way at the John Jacobs Inv. was the intense throws battle between Cameron Tabor (OK) and Hayden Baillio (OK) that created some national level results. Brasovan Pulls out of Arcadia Invitational
Our national editor, Scott Bush, is on site at the Arcadia Invitational in California today and he called in that rumor had it that Ashley Brasovan had pulled out of the much anticipated 3200 out there. We have confirmed this with another source: we will not get to see the Brasovan vs. Jordan Hasay rematch this weekend. While Brasovan managed to run a completely uncontested 10:33 last week (which followed a solo 5:06 1600 just hours earlier), she and her new coach decided to pull plans for the trip. The reason stated was that they did not feel she was yet 100%, since she missed so much time due to her injuries, therefore she did not want to face Hasay at this juncture and potentially lose by 10+ seconds. It was looking to be a great race--and still be a great race with some of the other talent in the field--and another look at the battle we watched at the end of Footlocker Nationals where Brasovan came out victorious. While we might question the logic in opting out of a trip that was already paid for and a chance to (win or lose) get more big race experience... ultimately, she and her coach did what they felt was right for her this season. While Ashley might not be competing, there will be a ton of amazing showdowns at this storied meet. Representing Florida will be Antonio Brandon of Wellington (800m) and Footlocker Finalist Emilie Amaro of Cypress Bay (3200m). Look for on site coverage from the Arcadia Invitatinal on our national portal MileSplit.us. Good luck to Ashley at district/region/state (and beyond)! -
Palm Beach County Championship: Brasovan, Seymore, Clark Set Records
Ashley Brasovan shows that she is really back with 10:33/5:06 double. Leonardo Seymore makes claim to fastest-in-Florida (maybe in the nation) with wind-legals of 10.35/10.39 and 21.14/21.19! Robert Clark soars to a 24-5 long jump, further than anyone in the nation with legal conditions this year. Full Story | Complete Results -
Brasovan Named Gatorade National Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year
It's been an amazing year for Florida's Wellington High junior Ashley Brasovan! After finally overcoming the "Footlocker South curse", she not only qualified for Foot Locker Nationals, but won the national championship! With a fearsome and uncharacteristic late race surge, she outkicked the best the nation had to offer including two former national champions. With that performance, along with another stellar year of races including a third cross country state championship, Gatorade announced today that Ashley has been named its first-ever Gatorade Girls National Cross Country Runner of the Year. Ashley's family threw her a surprise dinner party last night to annonce the news to her, apparently under the guise of her sister's birthday party. Imagine what her reaction must have been when she found out! We have an interview scheduled with Ashley, which will be posted perhaps tonight.

Today we asked Ashley about the honor, her training and upcoming season, and got a chance to find out a little more about this little starlet who has gone from Florida phenom to the nation's high school distance runner going into track season.

The Champ Wins Again, Brasovan Named Gatorade ROY
Ashley Brasovan (FL) - the 2007 Gatorade Nat. Girls XC Runner of the Year(Photo courtesy of Gatorade/Mark Elias)The Gatorade Player of the Year program announced Thursday morning that Ashley Brasovan (FL) is the 2007-2008 National Gatorade Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year. Ashley ran strong all season long, breaking her curse at the Foot Locker South Regional course, then went on to San Diego and won Foot Locker Nationals. Congratulations Ashley!

Brasovan Wins National Championship!
Oh there were plenty of doubters! There were doubts that she could qualify through Footlocker South--a course that jinxed her for the prior two years. And then there were doubters after she qualified with a 6th place finish out of the South region. But you'd be hard pressed to find any doubters today!Ashley ran what was described by many as the "perfect race" and it was exactly what Coach Doug Butler had prescribed that she do. Brasovan went out conservatively, hanging roughly around 10th place. Then slowly she started moving up in the pack... to 7th... to 5th. At about the 1.75 mile mark, she really started to make her move. At that point, Jordan Hassay of California had a big lead and looked like she would take it home--although some said Hassay looked weathered even early in the race despite her leading. Ashley moved into second place just before the 2.5 mile mark. She then whiddled away at Hassay's lead and finally took the lead for good with about 600 to go. Her lead grew and Hassay got caught. The rest of the Florida girls also ran great races.... four girls qualifiers and national championship! What a great day for Florida! Tons of coverage, photos, videos, results, and articles are up. Click the headline for coverage.

Brasovan Beats 2006 National Champ, Wins Great American
Ashley Brasovan (Wellington) proved why she is ranked #2 in the nation. Against some of the finest competition in the nation including defending national champion Kathy Kroeger, Floridians Emilie Amaro and Kayla Hale, and several other 2006 Footlocker finalists Brasovan closed the race with a fine last mile to extend her lead and win the Nike Race of Champions at Great American. In fact, she didn't just win: she destoryed the field. Kroeger, coming back from some issues that kept her sidelined during the spring, was the second place finisher--over 30 seconds behind Brasovan. Brasovan's time was 17:05.6. Emilie Amaro (Cypress Bay) looked very impressive though, defeating nationally ranked Emily Reese of Georgia, for a 18:00.7 third place performance. Kayla Hale (Holy Trinity), who reportedly was fighting off illness this week, was 28 second back from Amaro in sixth place. Episcopal girls had a decent but disappointing showing for a fifth place finish. Eric Larson of Penscaola Washington had a good day as the top Florida boy. Read full summary.... -
Brasovan, Hale, Amaro (and others) Finally Face Off At Great American
While overall the entry numbers are at their lowest levels ever for Great American, the competition--especially on the individual girls level--is looking pretty amazing. For the first time this year all of Florida's "big three" will race each other (ironically at a meet in Alabama). Ashley Brasovan, Kayla Hale, and Emilie Amaro are all ranked in the MileSplit South Rankings and favored to be Footlocker Finalists. Brasovan is currently ranked #2 in the nation and will face off against defending Footlocker national champion Kathy Kroeger of TN. Emily Reese (US#7 from GA) will also be vying for the individual victory, along with several other Footlocker hopefuls. This race will be the best individual battle of the regular season in the South this fall.Team-wise Episcopal, coming off its win over nationally ranked Eleanor Roosevelt at flrunners 8 last week, will test its strength against Mountain Brook AL (who is favored to win), Oak Ridge TN, Collins Hill GA, and others. We have the full list of Florida teams entered in the race and links to the entire entry list.

Brasovan Ranked #1 In Foot Locker South Region
After a strong performance at UF two weekends ago, Ashley Brasovan leapfrogs defending Foot Locker National Champion Kathy Kroeger (TN) and last year's runner-up Aurora Scott (VA) to grab #1 spot in the MileSplit US Foot Locker South "Power Rankings". Kayla Hale and Emilie Amaro, who qualified for Foot Locker Nationals last year, find themselves in the sixth and seventh positions. This puts Brasovan in an odd position of being a potential favorite for the national title, even though she failed to qualify for Nationals out of the South Region meet last year--when she finished 19th at the meet last season. With some additional big meet experience and two frustrating years at McAlpine behind her, we will all be hoping this is her year and she has learned to get out fast at McAlpine Park in NC. If she does pull it off, she'd become the first Floridian to win Footlocker Nationals. No Florida boys were mentioned this week. Previouslly, Danny Manco (currently out with a minor stress fracture) and Joseph Franklin received "on the bubble" shout outs. See the full list.

Ashley Brasovan's Opener is One to Remember
It isn't every day that one elite runner simply dominates another, but that happened today at the University of Florida Mountain Dew Classic. FL South #5 Ashley Brasovan beat FL South #3 Emilie Amaro by over a minute, as Brasovan won in 17:10 over the 5k course. Amaro is no slouch either, finishing thirteenth at Foot Locker Nationals in 2006. -
Brasovan Stunning in Opener, Franklin Also Looks Great
Some runners start their season and have some cobwebs to dust off after the summer offseason. A couple of meets in and they're back to their old self. And then there is Ashley Brasovan. This little diva comes out and just tears out of the gate! She dominated the field by over a minute today with an official time of 17:10.77 for the 5K at the UF Mountain Dew Invitational. And it wasn't a field of slackers either... Footlocker finalist Emilie Amaro was her closest competition at 18:19.53!To really make the jaws drop, reports have it this looked more like a jog in the park for Brasovan, rather than the fastest time in the nation so far this season! Ashley was seen laughing and talking with people on the sidelines as she cruised by. Brasovan could easily take her game to new heights this season never seen by ANY Florida high school girl in the past. Look out!Joseph Franklin proved he's no slouch on the grass after a record setting season in the mile this spring. He won the boys race easily in 15:32.91. Guillermo Echarte was second about 25 second back, followed by Eric Larsen. The boys race backed up past the chute at about 40th place, so times past that point should not be considered accurate, although everyone was kept in order so places and team scores are on target.
