The Atkinson household has a total of four Foot Locker Nationals appearances between Brian and his wife Kayla (Hale). Hale, is the lone Floridian to make it to San Diego three times (2006-2008) while her husband made the trip in 2009. Lyman High School has produced some of the state's fastest distance runners for over two decades. Names like Teddy Mitchell, Nick Radkewich, Robert Saltman, Rob Evans, and the latest in line Joshua Jacques. Jacques added himself to the state championship list after winning the 4A Cross Country Finals in 2014 and qualifying as a 2015 Foot Locker Finalist.
Merritt Island senior Steven Cross is one of six Florida boys to make the Foot Locker National Finals more than once in the meet's 37 year history. After finishing 29th in 16:12.00, Cross knows what the meet entails, the style of competition he will face, and what it will take to earn All-American honors. We caught up with him to talk about the last cross country meet of his high school career and his training leading up.

Not only does Ashley Brasovan own the fastest time of any Floridian at Foot Locker Nationals running 17:20, but she is the only athlete from the Sunshine State to win the prestigious event, taking home the title in 2007 over 2006 champion Kathy Kroeger. Leonard standout and University of Oregon runner Ryan Pickering (pictured above( was 9th at the 2010 Foot Locker National Championship, two spots behind fellow Floridian Jimmy Clark (Creekside, University of Florida). 2A Cross Country Finals champion Alyssa Pujals of Pine Crest clocked the fastest time of any Florida girl at Foot Locker South. Pujals, an University of Florida signee, was 14th in the girls seeded race in 17:56.00. We combined the results from every race. See where your time ranks.
Calvary Christian sophomore Danny Ferro (pictured below) who was 6th at the 2A Cross Country finals won the boy's sophomore race at the Foot Locker South Regional in a new personal best and sub 16 minute time of 15:59.00. Ferro's time was the 8th best of any race of the day for a Floridian, and fastest not including the seeded race. Florida will be sending two runners to San Diego, with Lyman's Joshua Jacques and Merritt Island's Steven Cross taking eighth and tenth, respectively, to secure their berth to nationals. Florida's top individuals are in Charlotte, North Carolina for the 2015 Foot Locker South Regional. The championship races will take place 10:00 and 10:40 a.m. with the girls starting first. The temperature at McAlpine Greenway Park is slated for a comfortable 60 degrees at that time. Bridget Blake competed in the Foot Locker South Regional during her junior and senior year's at Dr. Phillips High School. Blake placed 7th and then 6th to qualify for the national meet in San Diego both years. We caught up with the current junior at Florida State to talk about her time at Foot Locker South and what she's been up to since.
Former Leon standout Matt Mizereck competed in the Foot Locker South Regional all four years of his his high school career. He ran 14:51 at the 2009 Foot Locker South Regional to finish fourth a year after finishing one spot out in 11th in 2008. As a senior, Mizereck would finish 10th out of the 40 top runners at Foot Locker Nationals in San Diego. We caught up with him to talk about those races, his college career, and what he is up to these days.
In one of the best races for Florida girls at Foot Locker South Holy Trinity alumni Kayla Hale just misses out on the title and edges out fellow Sunshine State runners Emilie Amaro and Brittany Koziara for the runner-up spot. Amaro and Koziara would all run under 17 minutes as well, the only three Florida runners to ever break that barrier at Foot Locker South. Only three other girls ever in Florida history have achieved times under 17 minutes. Their times rank 5th,6th, and 7th respectively ever at the FL South Regional. Ashley Brasovan is one of a handful of Florida athletes to qualify for Foot Locker Nationals in San Diego two times while at Wellington High School. Her time of 17:07 set in 2007 as a junior is the fifth fastest ever by a Floridian at Foot Locker South. Brasovan ran in one of the best Foot Locker South races for Floridians when she finished sixth behind Brittany Koziara (4th), Emile Amero (3rd), and Kayla Hale (2nd). As a senior, she was 4th earning her spot among the nation's best.
When Billy Convey competed back in 1982 the meet was sponsored by "Kinney". Convey who starred for Ransom Everglades and went onto compete at the University of Virginia finished second in the regional and 16th at the national meet. He reflects on that race, how it kick started his recruiting, and what he's been up to in the year's since.

Jimmy Clark competed in the Foot Locker South Regional twice placing 17th as a junior and winning it all as a senior in 2010 with the fourth fastest time ever by a Floridian of 14:55.00. We caught up with the former Creekside standout and current University of Florida senior leading up to this year's race in North Carolina.
And so it begins-a week of anticipation that will culminate in 10 athletes from four different regions being sent to the sunny San Diego, CA for the granddaddy of them all, the Foot Locker National Cross Country Championships. And who wouldn’t want to go? The weekend is set to backdrop of the storied Hotel Del Coronado( Marilyn Monroe’s “Some Like it Hot”) and Balboa Park which has seen so many great high schoolers clash to earn bragging rights as the nation’s top high school athlete.
2014 marked the first time since 2010 that Florida didn't send a representative from Foot Locker South to the national meet in San Diego. Fatema Jaffer was 29th last year. Prior to that the Sunshine State athletes made eight trips out west. Five years ago, Kathryn and Erika Fluehr went 1-2 on the McAlpine course. See who has the best chance to make it in 2015?
