A Preview Of HS Distances Races On Friday At Florida Relays

Girls 1,600m Run

Eliana Black came out on top last Friday in a battle of Florida's best in the FSU Relays 3,200m and she will look to attempt the same this Friday in the 1,600m.

Black has yet to run the 1,600m this season, but has a personal best of 4:56 from last spring as an eighth-grader.

In the field with her are several runners who have already dipped under five minutes this spring or certainly ready to between Ponte Vedra junior Lindy White at 4:57, future Florida Gator and Buchholz senior Kate Drummond at 4:59, and Black's own teammate Madeleine Gear of Cambridge Christian at 5:01.

Gear ran 4:58 last spring at her district meet and is coming off a 10:45 3200 PR race at the FSU Relays. White and Drummond both broke 5 minutes for the first time together in the same race earlier this season pushing each other to the line at the East Coast Classic hosted by Flagler Palm Coast.

Eliana Black was the runner-up in last year's Florida Relays when she broke 5 minutes for the first time with a 4:57 performance. She has a chance to not only win this year, but also establish herself as the state's fastest and leader in a second distance event in the 1600 meter run.

Another freshmen to watch in the race and her seed time does not reflect her indoor performances including a 5:00 performance for the full mile is Creekside's Alyson Johnson. The Florida indoor mile state champion Johnson is also scheduled to run the 3200 meter run in the morning and shoot for her first sub 11 minute race, but will many hours to recover back for the 1600 meter run to go off in the afternoon session on Friday to try and challenge Black and rest of the field for the win.
