Deland Invitational: Seymour, Pineiro, Score Back To Back Wins Of Season

A good cross country runner will run hundreds of miles to prepare for that one race of 3.1 miles, a great one will run over a thousand miles during the heat of the Florida summers to accomplish great things four months later in November. Today I was fortunate to see some fantastic young athletes who obviously want to be great ones, and their work ethic, heart and determination should definitely lead them to truly great things down the road in November and beyond.

Deland Invitational Preview

While we are not positive on exactly what edition of this race we are running this weekend there are a couple of facts that we are certain. Deland has hosted numerous cross country meets over the years including invitationals, conference, district, regional and the 1977 FHSAA State Championship. In 1977 the Deland Invitational included two of the very best runners in the state, Kenny Clark of Rockledge (3A), and Herbie Wills of Leon (4A).

Jim Ryun Invitational: Wollrath, Salas Soar To Easy Wins on Tough Holloway XC Course Debut

Day two of the 2012 Jim Ryun Invitational kicked off at Holloway Park in Lakeland and the general consensus among runners was that the course was tough with the hills and sand scattered throughout. The times might not have been record shattering, but hey this is Florida, and these runners weren't used to a "real" cross country course. Mike HIll and Chris Kail of Elite Timing had the meet on track and rolling along great. Meet director Paul White described the event as a success and thanked God for the great weather. The racing was great as well as two runners won for another week, while several others had breakthrough performances.

Jim Ryun Invitational - Day One Coverage

The day finally came! After what seemed like forever--but really was only a few months--a new cross country course was born out of nothing. All summer we have covered the plans as they progressed at Central Florida's newest venue and out of an old phosphate mine that laid unused for forty years was born what will in time become one of the finest venues in the Southeastern United States. How did it live up to the hype?

Jim Ryun Invitational Preview, Jim at HQ, Holloway Park to Debut

The greatly expanded Jim Ryun Invitational goes off this weekend and it is opening day for the highly anticipated new Holloway Park course. Ridgeview Bob Hans Invitational

On Site Coverage: Ridgeview Bob Hans Invitational

From the opening gun of the boys’ varsity race to the final finisher of the open 5k, Ridgeview High School proved once again why Bob Hans is among the best early season invitationals in the Jacksonville area. The Ridgeview course underwent several recent changes, however the course was well marked, and times were fast across all races. For many schools, Bob Hans serves as that final preparation before taking on the likes of the best in the state, however even with this in mind, the competition should not be taken lightly. The field was highlighted by traditional powers such as Bartram Trail, Nease, Bishop Kenny, Chiles, and Mandarin, while up-and-comers like Stanton Prep, St. Augustine, and Bishop Snyder would let their presence be known.

Ralph's Musings: Making Dew

Everyone knows that the University of Florida is in Gainesville, but how many people actually know who the home of the Gators is named after? I do. So as an experiment, I asked 100 random people who the town was named after. Most of them kept walking, but the ones who answered were pretty much right on target. “A guy named Gaines, I guess,” was the most common answer.  None, however--in a following question--could tell me why. Encouraged nonetheless, I continued.
