Land O' Lakes sophomore Natalie Abernathy and Vanguard junior Diego Lavieri-Sosa brought home their first regional championships by taking the 3A-2 crown at Holloway Park in times of 19:17.37 and 16:13.20. On the team side, Vanguard and Matanzas finished 1-2 while Logan Locascio and the Gainsville boys won by 18 points over New Smyrna Beach. Andy Warrener recaps all the action.
Hurricane Matthew threatened the Sunshine Athletic Conference or Pasco County cross country meet on Saturday. The close brush with the Category 4 hurricane forced cancellations of athletic event all over the state. The early season meet, the Wiregrass Ranch Run with the Bulls did get cancelled in the wake of Tropical Storm Hermine. The Citrus/Hernando County meet scheduled for last Thursday was postponed and dozens of Friday football games got re-scheduled. Fortunately, the storm had passed by Saturday morning, leaving a soggy, muddy course that spattered just about every runner on the course but nevertheless, the meet went on.
Land O' Lakes sophomore Natalie Abernathy is the lone runner in the class of 2019 to break 19 minutes. Abernathy accomplished that feat at the North Port XC Invitational with a time of 18:55.80. A total of seven girls have run under 19:30 for the season. We take a look at the top 500 sophomore girl this cross country season.
The 20th Annual Land O' Lakes Gator Invitational, recently renamed the Keppel Invite after late Gator coach Kris Keppel went off on Saturday at Crews Lake Park in Spring Hill. The course was a familiar one for many teams, starting down a grass straightaway before hitting pavement, then circling clockwise around the open starting area.

With a slew of meets going down all across the state, Pasco and Hernando County teams gathered at the Concourse Pavilion at the Pasco County Sheriff Department's Safety Town in Spring Hill.
Hillsborough County powerhouse Steinbrenner made a resounding statement at the Wesley Chapel Wildcat Invitational on Saturday, pushing four runners into the top six and all seven runners into the top 10 and scoring a razor thin 20, easily out-pacing runner up Land O' Lakes with 43. Sunlake girls took third with 76.
The Niceville girls finished as the 3A runner-up in 2015, but return six of their top seven from that team with Hannah Schneidewind, Claire Crist, and Erin Eubanks a solid 1-3. Fort Myers has top ranked Krissy Gear, the 3A individual runner-up at the helm for the Green Wave, while mainstay Chiles, the defending champions are ranked third. The Land O' Lakes Gator girls were going for their third straight district title. The Gator boys were going for their fifth. The Gator girls, so strong through the field events, had another huge day amassing 161 points to runner up Lecanto with 119. Sunlake was third with 102 and Pasco fourth with 94.

The teams with the most versatility swept the 2016 Hernando Kiwanis Invite on Tuesday. On the girls side, it was a group of varsity soccer players that helped guide the Gators to the girls title. The Land O' Lakes Gator girls prevailed 150-127 over the extremely versatile Nature Coast Tech Sharks.

The newly re-named Land O' Lakes Keppel Invite pays homage to the Gators' late coach Kris Keppel and it would be the host Gators that presented the biggest challenge to Wiregrass Ranch.
It's a sad day in the Florida running community as we learn of the passing of longtime Land O'Lakes coach Kris Keppel. Keppel who coached for over two decades with the Gators lost his two year battle with cancer on Sunday afternoon.
It's Saturday mornings where Land O'Lakes cross country coach Kris Keppel and his Gators shine, but Friday night was Keppel's moment. In front of a packed house at the school's football game, Keppel was presented with a plaque and a street outside the school was named "Keppel Way." Keppel who is battling cancer is a true inspiration not just to the running community, but to everyone he comes in contact with. From hosting the LOL Gator Invitational every year, to showing us what true perserverance really means, he always has a smile on his face. Not only does Florida have some of the best track and field and cross country athletes in the state of Florida we also have the best coaches around! Brooks, one of the top running companies, wanted to honor those coaches who go above and beyond in the community with their Inspiring Coach of the Year Awards. Recently, they named the top twenty-five finalists and three Sunshine State coaches made the list: Lightning Bolt Track Club's Garylnn Boyd, Flagler Palm Coast's Dave Halliday, and Land O' Lakes' Kris Keppel.
The 2013-2014 school year has provided some great highlights in both cross country and track across the Sunshine State. In the coming weeks many of our seniors will head out to start their college careers both athletically and academically. We wanted to salute them one more time in this special feature and say thank you for your support over the years.
The Early Bird Invitational at East Lake High School kicked off the season for most area track teams, Tuesday. Even being the first meet of the season, it held all the great earmarks of a late-season meet with personal records falling and heated rivalries forging fantastic finishes.
An early morning fog greeted the top seniors in the state to Tallahassee for the FACA Senior All-Star Meet. The south team drove the furthest of the bunch, but that didn't stop them from taking some hardware back. Katrina Santiago of Ferguson and Manny Velasquez of St. Thomas Aquinas won individual titles, while the South girls took home the team trophy. Coach Kris Keppel's West squad won the boys team trophy.
Lake Nona High School played host to the 3A Region 2 Championships. The top fifteen individuals and six teams advanced. Springstead sophomore Amber Philpott her fifth win of the year, taking home individual honors in 18:53.80. Ocala Vanguard edged out Seabreeze for the team championship. In the boys race, Land O'Lakes showed their prowess lead by Travis Nichols and Tyler Stahl who crossed the finish in near identical times 16:05.10 and 16:05.30. The Gators won the team trophy easily with 66 points. ,
We are less than two weeks away from the state meet in Tallahassee. Regional competition starts Thursday with Class 2A Region 4 and will continue through Saturday morning. Gulf Coast senior Caroline Barlow and Land O' Lakes senior Travis Nichols are this week's Athletes of the Week. Barlow had arguably the biggest win of her high school career at the Pre-State/FSU Invitational crossing the line in a new personal best time of 17:53.99, more than six seconds faster than runner-up Emily Edwards. Her time was the second fastest in the state for 2013 behind only Karen Xiang of Nease. Nichols has dropped his times week after week and picked up his fourth win in his last six races. For the second year in a row, he was the Sunshine Athletic Conference Champion, and did so in a new season best time of 15:55.30.
Land O’Lakes Gators cross-country coach Kris Keppel is legendary in Pasco County and well-known far beyond. His 20 years of coaching cross-country, 17 at Land O’Lakes High have entrenched him in the local community and in the hearts and minds of cross- country runners everywhere.
The story line coming in was the Estero Wildcat girls sending shockwaves through the cross-country community. After dominant performances at the Flrunners.com Invitational in Titusville a week ago and at the North Port Invitational a week before that, the Estero girls were not just favored to win, they were favored to sweep the top four spots or at least take four of the top five spots.
This week’s “big meet” will be on The Mark Bostick Golf Course on the University of Florida campus which is known to be challenging given the softer grass and multiple hills which are spread throughout. 72 teams are entered on the girl’s side and 69 on the boys teams will gather on a predicted steamy 90+% humidity and 75+ degree morning. Conditions have been dry this week, so the course surface may be more firm for better footing and performances across the board. Flrunners will be on-site with results, race video, video interviews, thousands of photos, and a complete recap of all the action.
Holloway Park is one of the nicest cross country courses in the state in my opinion and this weekend they opened it up to the masses. The Holloway Park Jamboree consisted of six races: a boys and girls junior varsity, a boys and girls varsity open, and a varsity elite boys and girls race. Travis Nichols and Hannah Brookover took individual honors while Sarasota Riverview swept the varsity elite team titles. Ean Ormsby and Tom Connors were on-site taking photos for flrunners.
Steven Barnabei admitted he still doesn't like the feeling of sore joints. There have been plenty of those since the senior-to-be rejoined the Land O'Lakes cross country team after months away from his teammates. (via wtsp.com)

Land O'Lakes junior Travis Nichols and Chiles senior Rachel Givens are this week's Warrior of the Week Winners. Nichols won the Sunshine Athletic Conference Championships for his second consecutive win of the season in a new personal best time of 15:58. Givens dipped under 18 minutes for a new personal best as well, crossing the line in 17:58 to win the Panhandle Championships in Marianna.
